Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Color is deep golden amber with small, creamy and thick, off-white head. Fresh aroma is caramel malty and hoppy with a hint of berries. Flavor is bit smoky, hoppy, caramel malty with very obvious metallic hints in finish. Medium-bodied and very smooth, foamy carbonated palate.

Bottle 8JD. Long time drinker, first time rater. Slight rum aroma. Clear amber color. Considerable zing to it, mostly because of the overly assertive fizz, but also due to hops. Body is caramel or honey with some citrus at the end. Nowadays, I think it’s perhaps more interesting than good.

Pours bright deep amber into a shaker. fluffy pancake head with excellent retention leaves spider lacing as it slowly recedes. Clean malt aromas. Crisp with sweet caramel upfront and a dry, lasting sour hop finish.

Pours a clear amber with a shiny white head. Smell is sweet and nutty. Taste is similar to smell, well-rounded, with a slight bitter hoppy finish.

Pours a nice copper with a solid dense white head. Aroma is somewhat hoppy with a malt backbone. Flavor has a certain nuttiness about it but caramel & toffee are slightly more dominant. Very refreshing...good session drinker.

12 oz. bottle. 35 years ago this was it, the best there was. Pours a nice creamy head, pleasant golden brown color, mild non-spicy, non floral nose, crisp, clean palate with finishing moderate hop[ bitterness. Still a pleasant beer but no longer uniquely outstanding.
