Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

12oz bottle. Surprised I haven’t rated this yet, I picked one up to fulfill my California Common brew on the stats page. Pours a clear medium amber a 2 finger foamy beige head. Nose is caramel malt and mild citrus. Taste is sweet caramel, toffee and bitter hops. Medium mouth feel. I remember trying this beer in the early 90’s and thinking it was great, but really heavy and strong. HA! It was compared to Keystone Light. Good gateway beer and sometimes the best beer available.

Off white head. Dark amber colour. Aroma is malty, fruity (nuts) with caramel and light spicy notes. Flavor is moderately malty with dried fruits, light wooden and hoppy tones, ending in a prolongued, dry, hoppy finish. Medium bodied.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber with a decent looking fine head. Smell and flavour are roundly hopped and roasted. Yes, I had it at a noisey ballpark from a plastic cup but it fell well short of it’s reputation.

Bottle. Aroma of yellow, orange, red fruits, pale/caramel malt, floral hops that blend in nicely. Flavor has a rich toasted character mingling with all the fruitiness and light hop bitterness. Full bodied but easy drinking and refreshing. Very nice beer.

355ml Bottle. Light clear bubbly amber with large foamy off-white head. Light malt aroma. Pleasantly clean, crisp, dry taste with clean, dry aftertaste. Good maintenance beer for a hot thirsty summer day. Not as bitter as the Liberty.
