Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Draft sample offered after the Anchor Brewery tour. Pours a copper/amber color with a foamy off-white head. Nice malt flavor with a hint of bitterness.

A very satisfying, drinkable beer with a good balance between flavor and thickness. The unique bottle, depending on present company, will make you look either suspiciously festive or middle-aged.

Bottle. Dark honey-gold pour, medium off-whtie head with good lacing. Nose - soft malt, muscadine, pear. Much more robust flavor than I expected. Dark hops, smoky malt, and baker’s yeast. Wonderful mouthfeel. I love the soft yet heavy carbonation.

Copper body with a thin dissipating head. Interesting aroma with some fruitiness and caramel. It may sound odd, but when I opened this up, I thought I’d grabbed an Anchor Porter by accident. Maybe it’s a character of the ingredients or something. I wouldn’t think the yeast since this is supposedly done with a lager yeast. Anyways, flavor is crisp, but with a kick of astringency that makes me recoil just a tad. Goes down smoothly and cleanly with a dry finish. Overall, an enjoyable beer.

A nice coppery orange color with a small but tight white head that has long lasting retention. Sort of metallic hoppiness in the aroma. Taste is nice and bready malts with that same noticeable metallic taste. Good earthy hop finish doesn’t overpower. I do like this beer, it drinks easy, but I’m let down by that macro-esque metallic flavor profile.

Deep orange with a nice off-white head. Malt and Grain, with a touch of caramel. Clean, ever so slightly bitter finish. Nice and refreshing.

Amber beer with a small head. Notes of caramel in taste and flavour. Nice long lasting aftertaste. Very balanced beer and very full bodied.

22 oz bottle. One of the classics. Faint malty aroma. Pours a nice amber color with a somewhat persistant light tan head. Rich, but muddled flavor of light roasted malt, a little nuttiness, some toffee, and a little grapefruit hop bitterness.
