Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

In a bottle at Bazbeaux downtown. Poured into a tiny glass, fun! Deep gold color, minimal head that collapsed quickly. Smells and tastes like "beer." A little more bitter than the usual but very smooth. Good choice if you feel like a plain old "beer" but want something tastier than a macro.

Incidentally, the pizza place has a decent selection of bottles including all sorts of domestic macros and imports. Surveying the tables, Anchor Steam was easily the most popular. A good sign for society, I think.

Solid but unspectacular beer. Good nose, mouthfeel is good, flavor is a bit bland but crisp and refreshing without tasting too watery. Some citrusy notes with a little bit of bitterness. Balanced beer.

Barley malt lager aroma. Cereal, slight citrus (lemon peel). Light lager flavor with hints of sweet fruit (apple, nectarine). Minor bitter hops in there as well. Has a sweet nutty finish. There is a roughness to the palate that I dig. A full and tasty lager.

Beautiful copper color in the glass. This is a great summer beer, it’s got a slightly sweet flavor with a hint of fruitiness, but it’s far from being overpowering in either dimension. Medium body with a refreshing crispness and moderate to lively carbonation. A slight bitter astringency in the aftertaste balances the sweet attack wonderfully.

Poured to a thick head with aromas of hops. Initial flavor of hops and ended with a slight bitterness that reminds me of vegetables.
