Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Pours light gold with a medium head. Aroma is hoppy with a bit of malt. flavor is the same as the aroma. Not one of my favorites, but very drinkable.

From bottle. Bitter malt with caramel in the aroma.. Clear thin head. amber in colour. Great bitterness, honey and wood. Bitter tangy finish. Decent beer.

Nothing special, but certainly not bad by any stretch. A little bitter, a little malty. Just a beer.

Maybe it’s different in the pouring rain of England as you Americans seem to like it, I was not impressed. Labelled as a Californian Common? A new one on me, showing my lack of geekiness. Will try it again and give it a chance. And I’ll try to get more of this style to make a decent comparison.

Decent beer. This was different but in a good way. Nice little brown color and lasting white head. Would probably drink again

Great! Pours a super thick white foamy head, color is nice, deep and clear bronze. Hints of orange and lemon in the flavor, finishes smooth, cleanly, and lasting. Give this to me any day. Thanks.

Pours a light copper color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is sweet fruits and light hops. Flavor is a nice balance of malt, hops and fruits. Light to medium body with a very smooth mouthfeel. Nothing particularly outstanding, but very good and easy-drinking. A very nice summer or lawnmower beer.

Poors a clear amber with a tan head. Aroma of malts, sweet slightly hoppy flavor with brown sugar, vanilla & clove undertones. Refreshing flavor for a thin body beer.
