Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Pours a light copper color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is sweet fruits and light hops. Flavor is a nice balance of malt, hops and fruits. Light to medium body with a very smooth mouthfeel. Nothing particularly outstanding, but very good and easy-drinking. A very nice summer or lawnmower beer.

Poors a clear amber with a tan head. Aroma of malts, sweet slightly hoppy flavor with brown sugar, vanilla & clove undertones. Refreshing flavor for a thin body beer.

Bottle. Had to try this one because of the name. Definitely an American classic. Pours an orange color with a light white head. Light aroma, some citrus hops. Has a simple flavor of malt and some fruit. Light clean finish with mild bitterness.

Perfume/fruity/floral aroma. clear with a nice vanilla flavored head. Taste is okay but nothing out of the ordinary. could be the style in itself is boring, not sure i’ve tasted this style. Whatever they did, they did it quite okay, but far from what i’d expect for a microbrew/special brew.

Bottle. Orange/amber color with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, fruitiness and a bit of bitter/earthy hops. Taste of toasted malt, frutiness, nuts, caramel, grain, citrus and some hop bitterness. Nice and highly drinkable.
