Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

A very nice beer for such wide distribution. The aroma was very muted because of over chilling, but did not seem bad or off. The appearance was a darker body with a very active head. The flavor was fine - a bit deeper than your average American pils. The palate seemed nice - it hangs on for a minute. Over all, not a bad beer, and a good alternative to many macros.

A brew that I have had dozens of times but now for an official review- 22 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured transparent brownish tan, low carbonation, white head after initial poured than transformed itself into a white ring around the glass after a few minutes. Weak aroma of malt, bread, and charcoal. Hits the mouth with a light-medium body, malt comes through cleanly, sweet note towards the backend, finish glides away nicely. An American micro staple and classic.

Bottle and tap. You really can still find a surprise or two in California. It reminds me of the train that could, with or without the steam. An ale that might gets you "across the pond!" A slow finish.

THOUGHTS: California commons aren’t really my thing, but I liked this one. Nice and malty. A nice surprise in a California beer. Nice sweet aroma. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, light to medium amber with a large, ever so slightly off-white head that mostly lasted and left fair lacing. The aroma was moderate Caramel malt and light citrus (lemon and lime) hops. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and acidic; while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet, moderately bitter and sour with an average duration. There was nice caramel malt then slight citrus (lemon) and more herbal hops. Nice balance. The medium body was sort of creamy, slightly syrupy and a little dry with fizzy carbonation and a moderate astringent finish.

The beer pours a copper amber color with a thin off white head that doesn’t hang around long. The nose is light with a slightly acidic malty flavor. The taste is clean with acidic malts and a very light hop bitterness. The finish is short but acidic and malty.

This beer is simply a delight. A great ’sipper’ as the Americans like to say. The flavour is everything one could wish for: delicate, classy; flawless. A great American beer.

Bottle. Malty in the beginning with hops in the background followed by a decent bitterness. An okay beer.
