Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Reddish orange pour with a frothy off white head. Aroma of light sweet malts and earthy perfumey hops. Flavors of light pine and citrus rind, dry...lightly sweet somewhat bready malt all pretty balanced. Medium body, lively carbonation, crisp, bitter, dry, malty with a malty finish that has a bitter kick before it’s all said and done. Had some in my glass and took a swig from the bottle and finished it that way. For some reason or another, it just tasted better out of the bottle. A worthy full flavored session beer.

Probably one of the best widely available beers. Pours a dark tan, with a dense head and little carbonation. Tastes kinda like a stout watered down with a brown ale. Definitely one to pick up.

Nice pour with tall white head that disappears within a minute or two. This is a very clean and flowing drink. Just a good solid beer.

[355ml bottle from Tesco’s, Reading] A remarkably large and lasting beige head belies the fact that this beer only has slight carbonation. There’s a hint of malt, a hint of orangea hint of bitterness, a hint of sweetness, but overall not a great deal of flavour - feels rather weak and watery. That said, the flavour that is there is well balanced and works well, it’s just that it leaves you feeling a little short-changed.

355mL bottle from the LCBO. Pours dark amber with a thick cream-coloured head. Strong malt backbone with moderate but balanced hopping. I’ll be sessioning this this summer.

Bright, clear, dark amber. Light aroma of bread dough and fruity hops. Wonderful, full flavor of grasses, malt and citrus, a small amount of sweet with a terrific bitter bite after. A nice treat for a regular priced beer.

Pours a amber orange with a moderate fizzy head that slowly disolves. The aroma is at first a tad metallic but that gives way to a lightly hoppy floral aroma that is mostly dominated by a toffee malty aroma. The flavour is good, with some good toffee malty notes, and a bitter citrus hoppy finish. Nice foamy mouthfeel. All around a top notch beer, with decent drinkability.

Lovely amber colour. Mostly malt in the aroma with a slight hint of hops. Lovely balance of body and bitterness with slightly burnt overtones. Well rounded finish with a superb dry edge. A classic.
