Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Not a bad beer but not great either in my opinion. Strong flavour, yet devoid of any nuance or character. This is a good beer to have at a restaurant or bar that has a limited selection, considering this stuff is everywhere. What was once considered a great pioneering California beer now seems like a 90’s fad. I’m enjoying it, but it’s not blowing my mind like some people think it should be.

Interesting beer. Very clean, almost metal-like quality in the flavor. Somewhat thin body for an ale. I enjoyed the hop flavor but would have to say that their liberty ale is much better.

A lovely deep clear amber colour, with a fairly large tan head. Aroma is pleasent, with a mildly citrusy aroma. Hops are evident, but subtle and smooth. Taste is rich and pleasent. Midly acidic and well balanced.

Not a lot of hop aroma. Slight malt aroma. Nice head out of the bottle. Bitter finish.

On tap...pours amber, little head on the glass I had, though I know you can produce one with this beer if you want to. Aroma is pretty faint...some burnt/roasted malt and a lil bit of hops, but really not much here. Flavor is a bit more bold. Mostly burnt/roasted malt flavors with some light citrus and hop accents. Palate is highly carbonated, and makes it a pretty slow drinker, though this is not necessarily a bad thing. Good change-of-pace beer!

Anchor Steam Bear is a clear amber color with a small but decent head. The aroma is roasted and malty. The taste is also full of roasted malts and contains acidic qualities and hints of nutty flavor. This is a very nice beer. However, not nearly as good as Anchor Porter.

I used to really enjoy this beer, I have not had it in years. It used to be a go to beer when I was in that neck of the woods, but it was something I could get all of the time I am sure that I would get tired of it. I really respect this style, and wish there were more people experimenting with it. Having said that, this is a nice and easy to drink beer on the lighter side, that still has a lot of flavor, some nice maltiness with some musty like hops flavors.
