Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

12oz bottle. Really balanced beer. Really nothing too extraordinary about this beer; nothing to rave about, but still very drinkable and wouldn’t mind having another.

Pours to a dark golden color. Not much aroma. Very drinkable beer. Very palatable, slight bitterness/hops, some caramel notes. Good beer!

Dark ochre in color with a perfect 2 finger head. As it settles to a nebulous cap, the foam leaves some really nice, solid lacing. Hardly any aroma but I can pick up some caramel malt. Flavor is quite simple but flavorful. Sweet caramel notes are immediately apparent, along with some brown sugar, cookie dough, and even a hint of fruity esters. There’s a tiny hop bitterness in the finish but this beer is all about toasty sweet grain. Palate is good, with a very smooth mouthfeel that might be a touch high in carbonation. Refreshing, infinitely drinkable.

Well, what a enjoyable and drinkable beer. I will say that it is not a "memorable" beer that I will tell all my friends about but it is really a solid brew. nice looking, malty, goes down nice and easy. It is one of those beers you should always have on hand.

I can’t defend this as a great beer, but I can say I always find it quite drinkable and enjoyable. Amber pour, small head. Lager-ish, but a bit more malty and slightly more hops. Don’t know many beers to compare it to.

It looks and tastes like a lager to me...a bit too much bitterness (like when a lager has gone skunky) and not much else, wonder if my sample was past it’s prime.
