Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Bottle. Pours orange with an off white head. Malt dominated aroma with notes of caramel. Medium body. Balanced flavor with caramel notes. Pretty good.

Bottle at home. Pours very clear amber colour with plenty of thick yellowish head. Hops, citrus and red berries in a sweet and deep aroma. Mild mouthfeel, sweet and fruity. Could use some more bitterness in my opinion, but a pleasant drink altogether.

This one is tough. Sometimes I get a really nice fresh version of this beer, served at almost cellar temperatures (which the waiter apologizes for!?), and it’s serene. Other times, I get one from the Bottom of the Hill and it tastes like its just about to turn. Not a great beer when it has age on it or when the lines haven’t been cleaned (obviously). When it’s fresh, it has a great, apricot/peach note in the nose, has a nice sweet flavor, finishes slightly dry and is exceptionally drinkable. I wish Fritz would put a little more quality control into his supply chain, but who the hell am I to criticize them. I would recommend getting at a place with very high turnover on their beers. Had at Grant & Greens in San Francisco once and it was a sour apple...

On draft- Ned’s Montana with Dad. Light amber, no head. Mouthfeel was a bit light, thin. Taste of spice more so than hops or malt. Pretty good, but not my favorite.

Bottle. Meidium high off-white creamy and lasting head. Hazy dark orange bodyLovely Lovely fruity, apples, pears and abricot, and spicy aroma. Fruity dry and bitter. Low carbonation and a long bitter afteertaste. Quite tasty for such a low alcohol beer. Well done.

Poured a very lively slightly hazy orange with a good size off-white head, nice lacing. Aroma very mild, slight hops, orange juice malt. Taste more hoppy, a little minerally harsh, the orange juice malt is there at the start but very muted and has faded by the finish, which is a little too bitter for a little too long. Mouthfeel nondescript. Very easy to drink though.

The beer that started it all for craft brewing. This is a true classic and begin with amber color and an aroma that has hints of biscuit and caramel in it. The head is white and the lace on the side of the glasses stays with you all the way down to the last sip. Hops aren’t overly dominant, and it is the malt that take center stage in the taste. Clean and crisp in mouthfeel. Very good beer.

Nice color, nice head. Light body is disappointing, yet I see how it can work well with the sweet malty taste. Flavor is toffee, cereal, and caramel with a dry, spicy aftertaste. Pleasant all around.
