Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

It poured a hazy amber liquid with a thick medium sized foam with some craters. It left just a little bit of lacing though. It had a fresh smell of pine needles and citrus. It had a medium body with some citrus but also a bit bland. It felt stingy in my mouth. IT feels like it’s lacking something. It got some bitterness but not in a hoppy kind of way, more like overboiled tea. An ok beer.

Tap. Copper pour with attractive head. Bready nose. Flavors of biscuit, sourdough, orange peel, and sea salt. Mild assertive hop finish. Great session brew.

Bottle. 4.9%. Clear copper pour with a moderate white foam, medium retention, some lacing on side of glass. Aroma is light, citrusy, grainy. Taste is quite smooth, toffee sweetness and barley and grains, light hops. Finish is surprisingly bitter tasting given the sweet aroma, but smooth enough to have you reaching for another.

12oz bottle. Pours a nice clear copper. Carbonation bubbles last for a long time. Malty flavor with a nice bitterness. Very pleasant, drinkable beer.

Extremely full body and flavor that lasts on your taste buds. I was first introduced to this beer on a trip to San Francisco and have been a fan ever since.

On tap at Zachary’s in Tucson. Pours a relatively clear amber with significant amounts of very fine white head. Aroma is of citrus and a little hops. Flavor is rather similar, and the aftertaste is pleasantly of toffee or caramel.

A: Poured with an average-sized, white head that diminished fairly quickly to a thin lace. Some slight lacing on the side of the glass. Body is a very nice copper color, and slightly hazy. S: Interesting... seems to be some caramel in there, along with some citrus (orange? lemon?)... light hops in the aroma as well. Quite pleasant. T: Definitely as interesting as the smell... not quite like anything I’ve had before. Again, the caramel comes out at first, but then it finishes slightly bitter and dry. I can still detect the citrus in there as well, and maybe some herbs/spices. M: Medium-bodied and thin-textured, but still some slight creaminess coming in as well. Good carbonation. D: I could have several of these... they go down quite easy, but still really wake you up with their unique taste. Wish this was more readily available around here!
