Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

On tap-Flying Saucer Cordova. A nice deep amber pour. A well hopped brew with a very satisfying mouthfeel/palate.

12 oz. bottle in lager glass. This beer grows on you. Initial aroma is malty and slightly caramel. Nice amber color with a creamy, but short lived head. Nice roasted flavor. A little thin, but with a very nice quick bitter finish that makes it slightly arid.

12 oz bottle from TC Craft. Pours with a straw color and a nice foamy head. Aroma and taste are quite a bit like a normal macro-brew but with a little bit more body and flavor. Slight hops presence both in the flavor and in the finish. Admittedly, I’m not too familiar with the "California Common" style of beer so it’s tough for me to know what they’re trying to do but it’s a decent beer.

Bottle pours a see through yellow with a small white head. Aroma is lightly sweet, malty, and a hint of spice. Taste is sweet and crisp with a slightly bitter and spicy finish. Very smooth and easy to drink.

12oz. bottle, pours a murky gold with a medium white head. Aroma is mostly yeast, and some hops. Smooth buttery mouthful - flavour is caramel malt, yeast, with a nice bitter aftertaste. Great beer.

Anchor Steam is elusive to rate, simply because it’s not particularly a bad beer, it only bottoms out in mediocrity. The carbonation pops and buzzes in the glass, and gives the flavor a fizzy and light consistency. The taste is bitter and yet curiously blank. I’d site the amber color and the archaic looking label as the most noteworthy aspects of this underwhelming brew.

(12 ounce bottle - pint glass) Pours a translucent yellow liquid with frothy white head that leads to little lacing. Aroma is fruity. Taste is mostly fruity. Has a roasted malt quality that is balanced with an assertive hop characteristic. Lively carbonation and a pleasurable bitter after taste.
