Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Sampled fresh at the brewery after the tour. Noticeably better and fresher than bottled back in Tx. Medium golden color with bright white head. Definite lacing. Sweet wheaty honey smell that was mouth watering and inviting. Simply the freshest, best tasting wheat beer I’ve had. Crisp wheaty honey taste and a medium length finish that left me wanting more. Very nice, refreshing, and easy to drink. A true classic, and a benchmark for the style. <Originally gave it a 4.4 fresh at the brewery, but it is significantly more bland when bottled, and not fresh.>

Golden body with a short lasting creamy head. Aroma is malty and maizy, little citrus in it. Flavor is maizy and malty, larger citrus notes here than in the aroma. Grassy hops. Palate is thin and watery.

Eggy foam? Maybe not, but it was a ok wheat beer. Kind of one note and a little bland for their beers.

Bottle at beerbistro. Golden yellow body, small white head. Sweet honey and pale malt in the aroma. (6+) Similar flavour with notes of sweet honey, light toasty malt notes. Hing of ginger is likely in my head. Average palate. Accomplishes what it sets out to do nicely, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a bit ho-hum mild.

Bottle. Pours clear yellow with white head and good lacing. The aroma is extremely grainy, with some hay and zest notes. The flavor is much the same, but heavy on the hay. Some fruit esters come out as it warms, but nothing particularly interesting.

On tap at Sacramento Sports and Brew Fest. I finally found an Anchor beer that I don’t like and suprisingly...it’s an American Wheat. Surprise, surprise. An aroma of tortilla corn chips. Literally. Like taking a big whiff of a freshly opened bag of corn tortilla chips. Underneath that blast, was some wet hay-like aroma trying to get out. Appearance was a bright golden hue, nice head. Flavor was BORING. Almost like chewing on paper, it had this unpleasant something that I can’t put my finger on. I couldn’t even finish my beer with this one. Ugh. No thanks.

Not like any wheat that I’ve ever had, I actually could not have told you that it was a wheat beer while I was drinking it. Aroma is bready, but doesn’t offer much, golden in color with a firm dense head. flavor is remarkably dry and addictingly so. Quite enjoyed the dry tart flavor. palate is light and would prove to be good for the summer time. quite an enjoyable brew despite low ratings.

Pours a clear, sparkling golden color with a white average, rocky head; longevity is fair and lacing is sporatic. Nose is grainy, wheaty and fairly dull. Flavor isn’t much better; lots of somewhat sweet wheat bread with a hint of citrus and light grassy hop notes bringing moderately low bitterness. Palate is light, almost fizzy, and crisp with a dryness to it. Finishes quickly with with dry bread notes and a light hop bitterness. A fairly unimpressive wheat/summer ale with minimal character and not all that refreshing. Not one this breweries best offerings.
