Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Bottle: Pours a light yellow crystal clear color like PBR with a huge white foamy head. Aroma is of light malts and citrus. Flavor has a nice light maltyness and a light hop bitterness, definite citrusy notes and a nice crisp finish. I wouldnt drink this often but really hits the spot on a hot day.

Has more of a malt flavor to it than most American Wheats I’ve had. Hops are very sudued-not much citrus, light grass notes. Probably a good hot weather beer, but not noteworthy otherwise. Then again I’m not a huge fan of this style.

Pours a crystal clear gold with a good head that fades to a thick lace. the aroma and the taste are not anything to brag about, but it’s not bad. Definitely a summer beer, but there are better options out there.

Something of a light lemon, grassy aroma. Could be mistaken for one of the better mass produced lagers, almost. Light orange-toned gold color. The head laced somewhat on the rapid road to oblivion. Medium+ mouthfeel. It’s got a light citrus bite, some rather light wheatiness, and a bitter finish that could match a pilsener. Likely a good pool beer.

Clear, golden body with an impressive head. Super lacing, too. The aroma is on the weak side, but that’s true of most wheat beers I’ve had. Somewhat bitter flavor, but there are definitely notes of malted wheat. Light on the tongue, as I’m sure that’s the way it was meant to be. Refreshing. Sure, I’ll have another.

Slightly sharp but fresh and citrussy nose. From there it goes a bit downhill. Although it is initially a fresh, it develops cloying and unpleasantly bitter. As the first modern American wheat I guess there was still a lot to learn.

Bottle. Pours a sparkling yellow with a large, white, sudsy head. Aroma is limited to a light grainy hay with a hint of yeast. Palate was watery, thin, fizzy and metallic, and the flavor was even less inspired. While light-bodied and easy to drink, this one is pretty bland for a wheat. It tastes to me more like a lager with a long metallic finish. The best thing I can say about this one is that I’m glad that I purchased it as a single.
