Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Color is slightly foggy gold with a thin head. Aroma is wheat, banana and clove esters, pineapple and corn. Taste is wheat, along with banana, pretty normal. Normal body.

NB worthy snifter. Light straw color. Aroma is light and crisp with some wheatiness. Wheat taste at first followed by a little tart, mild citrus and banana flavors and a flavorful finish. It is very much an early edition of an American Wheat, which can often be a very light easy drinking beer, which this is. I would image this is good in high amounts at a baseball game or when fishing.

Golden corn body with great bready head. Something is off on the nose. Soapy corn with grapefruit and very metalic. Thin watery palate with a weak flavour of metal and malt.

Bottle (GBBF 2006): Sweet malts in the flavour. A bit bland and boring though. Just sweet lager malts and a slightly fruity edge.

Bottle. Slightly hazy gold color with a puffy bleach white head, mostly lasting. Aroma of very light wheat malt, lemon, honeysuckle, and some straw. Flavor was mostly AWOL. Some mild lemony tartness, but mostly watery. Granted it’s meant to be a gulpable hot weather thirst-quenching wheat, but this needs more flavor character. A disappointment considering the brewer.

Batch number on bottle is 6UO, for what it’s worth. Beer is clear, light, bright pumpkin-orange colored with a small, white, frothy, mostly, rapidly and totally diminishing head. The aroma is really yeasty with moderate-to-heavy notes of dough, light note of basement; Malty with light note of slightly husky toasted grain, trace of caramel; Hoppy with light notes of lemon zest and a lesser note of grass. The flavor is lightly sweet, moderately-to-heavily acidic, lightly bitter/dry with an average-length, lightly sweet, moderately acidic/slightly astringent, lightly bitter finish. The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is fizzy.

Enjoyed this one on draught at the brewery in San Francisco, back in July 06. The brewery tour was tremendous, and this was the first beer we sampled after the tour. I’ve had this beer a few times in bottle, but this was the first time I had it very fresh on draught, and its was excellent. An American wheat beer by style, this is a tart, refreshing, thirst quenching brew, with good wheat malt character. Anchor Summer Beer pours to a beautiful, bright, pale gold color, with a nice white head, and a good carbonation. The nose is very nice, with some good citrus aroma, paired with some "grainy" wheat malt aroma. The palate is very crisp, with lots of good tart, and grainy wheat malt flavor. This beer finishes with more good tart wheat malt up front, then ends with a touch of citrus, hop bitterness. A very drinkable wheat beer, perfect for warm weather, and a beer you could pound with impunity.

Bottle. Very light malt aroma. Clear golden yellow color with small head. Light bland wheat malt flavor with very light hops finish and moderate carbonation. Completely underwhelmed by this beer - very bland and boring. Definitely not up to Anchor’s usual level.
