Commercial Description:
This is it! The powerful, full-bodied, strong beer which is Andechs's trademark. Brewed in the traditional Triple Mash procedure and available throughout the year, not just during the "Starkbierzeit"!

I was really glad to see that this wasn’t available just during the Starkbierzeit, since I had just missed missed it by a couple of weeks. I think it’s safe to say that we still would have made a visit to the Kloster even if this particular beer wasn’t available. I don’t know about bottled versions, but fresh vom Faβ this is a real treat and worth the praise it receives. Roasty malts, fennel, plums and raisins. A nice hint of carbonation to keep the palate clean for each successive sip, of which there were many.

Bottle [Tasting @ Per 23-02-2007]. Outstanding Doppelbock! Initial appearance of head was almost none excising. What was there was slightly fizzy and white. Color was light reddish brown like. Aroma was heavy malt with notes of rye bread, caramel, toasted, molasses, light chocolate and cookie. Miscellaneous notes were light dry fruity and some wood like aroma. Full bodied with a light alcoholic texture and a flat carbonation. Flavor was heavy sweet with balancing burned candies bitterness. Excellent sweet caramel finish. Incredible beer.

(bottle) Clear, dark mahogany colour with a nice foamy and lacing tanned head. Moderately sweet roasted malt arma with caramel, liquorice and a touch of coffee. Sweet but not sticky flavour, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Toast-malty, slightly roasted taste with caramel, dried fruits and soft herbal notes. Sweet malty, toasty and tough bitter, but aromatic finish. A very good and rounded, classical Doppelbock.

Draught at ØLbaren - tasted Mette’s - and then bought one for myself. We call it Ahnheuser. Clear brown - white head. Bread, caramel, straw, brown sugar, ryebread, light thin feeling - but nice !!

Bottled. Pours a clear, copper color with a nice beige head. Malty and sweet aroma with caramel, some alcohol and stale hops. The flavor is sweet and malty, and maybe a bit hoppy for a doppelbock. It has a full, sticky, warming mouthfeel and a finish with alcohol, sweetness and some hoppy fruityness. A nice beer for the cold and dark season. (070111)

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from Quinns. Typical dunkel but a very good example. Really enjoyed this one. Great dunkel looks with a very well behaved head. Toffee, caramel, lots of dark malts and nice chocolate notes. Sweet but just about right. Slight bitterness to the finish to add some balance. Enjoyable beer.
