Bottle from some bottle shop in Switzerland, courtesy of tupalev - shared with blankboy, HogTownHarry and tupalev. Ruby-brown colour with a small mocha head. Aroma is very malty and earthy, with a pleasant hint of smoke that develops nicely as it warms. Flavour is very roasty, with notes of coffee and mild molasses, and more of that lovely smokiness. Really nice stuff - thanks for sharing, Jeff!

Bottle (from Bitter Virtue, BBE Feb 06). There were some really nice flavours in this - liqourice, choc, nuts, plenty of malt and an earthy back drop. The agressive carbonation and thin body really spoiled this for me although it was still mighty drinkable considering the strength which wasnt at all noticeable.

Bottle (500ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and Tupalev, bottle courtesy of tupalev - with the aid of a super-secret Canadian/Scottish agency in Switzerland. Poured clear ruby-amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of sour roast malt, fungi, plent of bitter hops, smoke - overall a surprisingly dark, funky earthy-peaty beer for a bock, almost a rauchbier to my nose. Taste follows the aroma, sweet roasted malt and balancing hops, but the smoke asserts itself and really grows on you; the alcohol finally makes its presence felt as it warms and opens up. Good thickish body, a bit slick. I really want to try this one again, savour it - good stuff.

(500ml, best by 2/18/06) Clear copper body topped by big beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, nutty, caramel, some cherry, light bread, herbal. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, cherry, some alcohol, herbal, light molasses. Some nuttiness and chocolate appear as the beer warms. Smooth medium body. Seems a bit light for a doppel -- more like the bocks I have had. Good stuff, but the alcohol shone through a bit too much for me to embrace it to the level that others have.

[bottle from beers of europe] Pours very dark brown with a dense tan head. Aroma is hugely malty, chocolate, brown sugar, there are also some berry fruit aromas and a faint touch of roasted coffee. body is excellent, alcohol is very well conceiled, finish is silky soft.

Bottle, at home. Dark brown with light brown head, almost diminishing, fair lacings. Aroma heavy malty (bread, brown sugar) and moderate hoppy. Flavor heavy sweet with a moderate, long bitter duration. Body medium, oily, soft carbonated.

Saarlander sent this gem my way as part of our last trade, Thanks Aaron! aroma of roasted malts, toffee, german chocolate and rye grain. the look is outstanding with its deep chestnut brown body and a whipped, creamy tan head. this has a wonderful balance to the flavor, toffee, chocolate, rye, and a slightly dry hop finish. very smooth and slightly silky on the tongue. light carbonation which is a big plus for me. a superb beer, not only to the style, but to any style.

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. ABV is 7.1%. Deep chestnut colour, large and creamy light tan head. Very nice roasty aroma with notes of rye bread, caramel, hints of liquorice and chocolate. Fairly dry roasty flavour (roast malts), notes of coffee, toast and rye bread. Dry and hoppy bitter finish. An excellent doppelbock, not as smooth and sweet as some others of this style.
