Bottle. Pours a lovely clear copper colour with a light tan head that diminishes quickly to surface cover. Lots of malt on the nose as well as notes of toffee, dates, raisins and spice. Flavour is also quite malty with notes of caramel, chocolate, dark fruit and clove. Smooth mouthfeel, with moderate carbonation and a long bitter finish. A very good doppelbock, less sweet than a lot of others, and with a little complexity in the flavour.

Dark red, small, diminishing had, beige coloured. Aroma is malty, with (lots of) caramel, cinnamon, clove. Full taste, fruity, smotheing like figs or dates. A little carbonation, slightly bitter, long finish, somewhat dry. Nice.

Bottle shared by malrubius at Paul’s homebrew day: Thanks Mike. Deep auburn pour with a dense creamy tan head. Toasted toffeeish aroma- very clean with a slightly raisiny note yet dry. Creamy body with a flavor that is also rich yet dry. Toasted thick dark clean maltiness with a mild raisin note and a touch of smoky character. An awesome Doppelbock.

Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton. Not really the world’s biggest fan of the style, but I could appreciate there is some quality here. Red tinged brown colour, with a small tan head. Burnt malt and brown sugar aroma, with dark fruit notes. Similar story in the flavour. Sweetness level tolerable. Alright, but bit over rated imo.

Deep reddish brown with a thick tanned head of about 2 cm. The head settles after a while and leaves some lacings. A rather big smell, very malty. Caramel, roasted malts, coffee and dark fruits. Grassy and spicy hop notes. The taste is better than the smell would have you believe. It’s not overly sweet, but here’s still plenty of malty sweetness. I like how the expected caramel and bready malts are complimented by roasted malts and coffee - interesting and not very common. Lots of date-like fruity notes. Wood and a subtle herbal hop note. The finish is mildly bitter with a well integrated alcohol flavor and lingering malts. Rather full bodied and very smooth. Quite a lot of carbonation. As for doppelbocks go - a style I sometimes have a hard time dealing with due to the cloying sweetness some of them showcase - this is one of the better I’ve had. The sweetness is not overly powerful and the "dunkel element" in this one adds lots of levels and flavors. Nicely balanced. But still, it’s not the most interesting beer in the world, and after one bottle I’ve had more than enough. Serving type: bottle (Copy of old Beer Advocate review)

Bottle shared by malrubius at Paul’s homebrewing session. Pours a clear reddish brown with a linen white head. Very pleasant aroma of malt, brown sugar, molasses and a bit of prune. The flavor is equally enjoyable with lots of rich malt, dark brown sugar, molasses and a bit of prune. There is some slight smokiness to the flavor as well. Overall, a first rate doppelbock. Brown coloued with a small beige head. Aroma is fat malty of caramell, toffe and light minerals. Flavour is generously malty, sweet and thick with carmelized fruit, caramell, nuts and other malt goodness. On the sweet side but still very balanced.

Bottle purchased to the monastery. Dark brown color with beige head. The aroma is toasted with some appearance of fruit and caramel. The body is light and the dry taste of malt and hop.
