Commercial Description:
With its deep, dark brown-black color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouth feel, mocha character, and, strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest, richest, and most complex stouts on the market today.

Dark dark brown pour. Lots of roasted malts and coffee notes on the nose. Taste is sweet but finishes with the dryness of a nice coffee. Enjoyable.

On tap at the Fort Worth Flying Saucer. Black pour with a brown head that took a few days to finally settle. Very creamy. Lots of malt. No smell.

Looks and smells like a stout, but that’s the high point of this beer. Pours a deep brown-black with a khaki head that quickly thins to nothing and barely leaves dots of lace. Aroma is lightly toasted oats and some raisin/plum. Flavor is a slightly odd mix of heavy roast, a little salt, and some smoke. The sweetness here is odd, and I can’t put my finger on it. Not exactly a traditional stout when it comes to mouthfeel or finish. Thin, but not quite watery. Finish is puckeringly sweet, which leads to an unpleasant end to an otherwise solid beer.

Sampled at Flying Saucer’s Second Annual Fall Beer Festival in Austin on October 24, 2009. Very black with a soapy head. Weak oat aroma and an astringent flavor. A little watery with a dry finish.

Pretty weak beer here. Taste fades immensely on the swallow and by the time it’s out of your mouth there isn’t anything left. Not too great while it lasts either. Very sweet and not too roasty. I would think this beer was yellow in a blind taste test. Not a fan.

Redolent of lightly toasted caramel malt with little trace of coffee. Presence of milk chocolate. Fruity hops blend in well and have a pleasant bitterness. Some bitterness contributed from roasted balts is also present. Beer is very sweet and full-bodied with sugary deposits. Lacks malt depth.

Poured black with a moderate beige head. Roasty aroma of chocolate and coffee. Flavor is bitter chocolate, brown sugar, a touch of prune, some bittering hops. Mouthfeel is moderately rich and creamy. Dry finish.
