A very sweet fruity aroma on top of a reddish amber brew. A sweet malt backbone with nice dry bitter hop notes. The malt is just extra sweet and the hops seem to be pretty average bitter hops. A little citrus flavor, but for the most part this is a pretty well balanced ale. There is some lingering sweetness and a little hop spice, but not too much. A pleasant brew.

Best brew from Anderson Valley, IMO. Great hoppy finish, nice malt blackbone. Especially good on tap. Fresh bottles taste good, but unfortunately people don’t buy this as often as they should, so more times than not it sits on the shelf too long before you drink it. Nice west-coast made british style ale. Too bad they changed the full name on the packaging to "Extra Special Beer" to entice people to drink it who might worry that it’s an over the top IPA or something. (At least this is what the marketing people at AVBC told me). Weird.

The color was a hazy light brown/orange. The head was thin, fizzy, and off-white. The aroma was coppery with some honey undertones. The flavor was coppery with sweet honey. The palate was thin bodied. The finish was metallic.

Little alcohol flavor. Dry palate. Hoppy finish. I didn’t find a lot of sweetness in this one. It’s got a funny taste that I can’t quite figure out. Grapefruit maybe? Possibly grapes? Has a bit of a dunkel taste to me. Unusual flavor but still has good bold flavors.Would be good on draught to have every now and then.

Cask pull at the PP Real Ale Fest. Deep golden, transparent colored pour with a thick head of foamy white. Lots of fresh, floral west coast hops in the aroma that carry a lot of lemons, white grapefruit, and white pine. While the hop bouquet is distinctly west coast, it doesn’t get too carried away with bitterness or herbal pungency; instead it allows the light citrusy characters to contribute a clean, refreshing fruitiness. Light bodied, creamy mouthfeel with a delicate carbonation. Extremely drinkable and refreshing. The hops don’t play nearly the dominant role on the palate that they do in the nose. It’s pleasing to have such a fragrant hop aroma without the overpowering bitterness on the palate. This allows the fresh, doughy, bready, biscuity malts to really stand out. Liquid form of an herbal artisan french baguette. Great hop utilization and west coast incorporation to enhance this example of the style rather than destroy it. Finish is dry, clean, and refreshing with a twist of lemony hops. Excellent cask beer.
