Prunes, brown sugar, plums, old books, herbal aroma. Moderately sweet, moderately acidic flavor. Moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter finish. A little spicy and sweet but not much /flavor/. Moderate body, watery texture, lively carbonation. derhumpen (6), USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 5, 2005 Gosh, I really liked this one even though it lacks some of the refinement of the style it proclaims to emulate. Loved the heavy, grassy aroma and muddy, cloudy appearance. Flavor is moderately sweet and bitter but is creamy none the less to the mouth. dhlesq (233), Thousand Oaks, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 29, 2005 Aroma of plum, raisin, chocolate, brandy, clove. Appears a tawny red port color, with a thin beige head that dissipates but leaves a thin film. Flavor is cherry, chocolate, plum, alcohol, salt. Palate is medium-light with moderate effervescence. Overall, this beer is slightly less than the sum of its parts, and the flavor could be a bit more balanced. Still, an interesting brew, and one that I am glad to have sampled. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 26, 2005 Rating Number 800. How they just fly by. Wonderful deep dark red color with a very thin white head. The is a slight bit of roasted chocolate in the aroma, but there is also a good scent. Also, there is a light yeasty clove sweetness in there as well. Flavor comes off as initially lightly spiced, with some grassy hop presence as well. The more I warm up to it the more I get some chewy candy sugar and yeast tastes in the back. Quite an impressive brew. marcus (1902), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 24, 2005 Well I just had one of these on tap at Toronado while conversing with David Keene, and he never once mentioned he was the brewer. Live and learn. This dark amber ale poured with a small off-white head, eliciting a malty chocolate aroma. The flavor, too, was of roasted malt and chocolate, with a bit of fruitiness. As the beer warmed, it began to taste more like a stout than a traditional Belgian Dubbel but was, overall, a very pleasant quaff. rogueman (19), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Aug 4, 2005 Pours dark, amber brown with a small light caramel colored head. Head dissipated quickly. Smells like black cherry, fig and yeast.
First taste is good, not great, but good. Has a little alcohol bite, but taste has a little complexity - kinda like it smells.
Overall, not much lacing or head but I would drink it again. Not bad for 4 bucks. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 28, 2005 22oz - Aroma is cherry, plum, and sweet yeast. Poured a thin dark brown with no head or lacing. Flavor is same as aroma with added doughyness and a little vinegar sting. Smooth and tart palate rounds it off. Not a bad American dubble.
