| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 24, 2005 Updated: Nov 2, 2005Dark ruby, almost brown colored body. A nice thick tan head in my chalice. The aroma is malty cherries and some oak. There is also a little bit of vanilla. The taste has some dry cherries. Also a slight vinous charcter with some light milk chocolate. The taste also has a hint of apples with a little bit of good tobacco. A smooth body that doesn’t hint at the high abv. A very well done rendition of the style. Drew (2410), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 22, 2005 Deep red/brown body, big tan head that settled to neat islands, and good lacing. Brown sugar, maple syrup, nuts, hints of fruit here and there - great aroma and flavor. Body was softly carbonated and finished dry. I really don’t understand why I can’t find this in Ohio. Flavor is similar to the aroma, fruit, caramel, yeast, and malt. Body is medium. i don’t find it too sweet, as others have. A very good double. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 12, 2005 Bottled. Clear ruby body with a small tan head, quickly turning into a ring. Body is medium//full, with lots of soft foamy carbonation, pleasantly dry. Aroma is coying, but complex. Malty with caramel, lots of fruits--raspberry, plumb, banana, prune--clove, earthy cellar aroma and roasted grains. Flavor is malty sweet, caramel, fruity with banana and dark fruits, maybe a touch of raspberry, plumb, prune; sour clove//sweat//cellar//touch of scarcely noticable citrus finish with an aftertaste of roasted grains. Too sweet, but nearly balanced and complex. Noticable alcoholic warmth (and flavor after it warms up a bit. An improvement over the Trippel--which I found difficult to drink--by leaps and bounds. Still a bit harsh, but the roastiness really helps offset all of those malts and mutes the alcohol a bit. jimhilt (1691), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 10, 2005 Pours with a one-finger light tan head, fades slowly, but leaves little lace. Deep clear amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is raisiny/malty. Starts sweet with caramelized malts, finish is smooth with hints of hops in background. Actually competes with a good Belgian double. $6.15 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.
