Commercial Description:
Each year, when people are starting to unpack their winter clothes and replenish their firewood, our tiny brewery in the coastal redwoods of Northern California makes seasonal preparations of a different kind. As the cold arrives, we release a unique beverage created to add warmth to even the coldest and darkest of winter's days. Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale begins with a very high original gravity to create a hearty and spicy brew with a deep amber hue and a smooth finish. Anderson Valley Brewing Company wishes you the very best for the holiday season and the New Year.

bottle poured a caramel amber color with a thick frothy light tan two finger head that fell very slowly. light carbonation with tiny bubbles. aroma has caramel malt, spice, vanilla, sweetness, and some light minerals. mouth feel is medium light and slight frothiness at the sides of the tongue saving it from becoming thin. has a spicy malt flavor with some hops coming through mid sip bringing in some bitterness. finish follows through with malt and light bitters. actually quite drinkable and held up well for being brewed probably six months ago.

bottle. pours murky light brown, head fades away quickly. aroma of spices and vanilla. flavor is sweet, light roasted grains, mild bitter. the fruity sweetness and spice make a strange combination that reminds me of bubblegum. doesn’t really work for me. re-rate: ugh. couldn’t finish the last one. took one sip and poured it. just a gross combination of flavors.

Bottle. Pours a deep amber with a half inch off white head. Sweet and malty aroma with a dissapointing level of spice. Malty and smooth flavor, not much spice until the end when it hits. Nice smooth palate.

Poured into a nonic. Two fingers of head atop an extremely hazy body that’s a little too light in color for the style. Smells like apple pie beer, if that makes any sense. Lots of brown sugar/cinnamon sprinkled on a fruity base. Interesting but off-putting. Tastes a lot like brown sugar with some caramel. Cinnamon is obvious, and again there’s a chewy dark fruitiness. Carbonation is way over the top, and to complicate things, the body is too light. This makes for poor mouthfeel and drinkability.

Orange, grapefruit, and caramel bouquet. Tea colored with a medium yellow head. Cashew and oraneg flavor. The cashew lingers and becomes tiresome. Not wintery, but unique and good.

This beer pours a clear bright amber colour with a small white head. Slightly fruity in aroma, cherries possibly?, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and apricots. Smooth silky mouthfeel, very fun and bubbly, a little alcohol aroma at times. Lots of spicey flavors!

One of the best winter spices (nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, etc...) ales I’ve come across. Some carmel and botterscotch notes but this is not too sweet, although their is an arificial syrup and metallic aspect that while faint is a limitation. Not thin at all but spinces are not overdone.

Dec. 2007 - I am truly dedicated to my beer hobby, saving this one to the actual day of the solstice (no I didn’t have it at 1:08 AM this morning). Beer pours deep dark caramel color with a smallish head and lacing. Faint sugary aroma invites me to sip. Flavor was...um, not really great...really sweet taste of vanilla syrup mixed with cinnamon sugar sprinkled in. Lots of caramel malts and other fruitiness in as well. Really full bodied and seemed like a well put together beer, I just wasn’t crazy about the flavor.
