Commercial Description:
Each year, when people are starting to unpack their winter clothes and replenish their firewood, our tiny brewery in the coastal redwoods of Northern California makes seasonal preparations of a different kind. As the cold arrives, we release a unique beverage created to add warmth to even the coldest and darkest of winter's days. Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale begins with a very high original gravity to create a hearty and spicy brew with a deep amber hue and a smooth finish. Anderson Valley Brewing Company wishes you the very best for the holiday season and the New Year.

Re-evaluation: Cleared my head and my palate - Observation confirmed; this is one wierd fuching drink. Two words; bread dough..... enjoy. Heavily malted with a solid, grainy barley backbone and a sugar cookie sweetness and some molasassy finish. Rich and full bodied with a silky smooth texture. Slightly spiced with a slight acid hop citrusness to pull it all together. Funny smell - but a great drink regardless - Very original, really defies classification - do not let the classification deter you, this is a great, unique, full flavored, creamy smooth Mega-Malt drink.

clear copper color, smells earthy with some cinnamon and spicy stuff. nice malt, not too sweet. a tiny bit better than alaskan winter ale because it’s not as sweet, but very similar. unique flavor profiles in both but i can’t see myself drinking a 6 pack of either.

Pours a nice dark amber. Sweet, malty, and a raisiny nose. Zero lacing. Spice notes, medium body and slight bitter finish.

Tried from bottle. Candied malt on the nose, with grapefruit hops and a small hint of mint. The palate translates the nose with a bubble gum-cotton candy malt sweetness, and vanilla. A nice creamy winter seasonal with balance.

10/24/07 From the bottle. Aroma is a low cascade hop flora forward followed by sweet malt. Appearance is light copper with a good off-white head. Flavor is sweet malt forward, candilike, with a good lightly sour malt note, and light hop resin. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a low carb feel and light creaminess. Overall, and interesting brew, but some might be bothered by the resiny flavor.

Pours a reddish brown with off-white head. Aroma of raisin, caramel, spice, and vanilla. Flavors of dark fruit, raisin, vanilla, and winter spice. Pretty good for a spice beer. Mouthfeel is a bit thin.

Had on 12/10/2004. Aroma is very faint but seems a bit sweet. Color is a hazy burnt orange with light carbonation and a thin head. Taste is light and clean. Starting with a light to medium body it goes down with a crisp fizzy feel. The finish comes on with a mild sweet taste that finishes off clean with a warm feel. Not a bad beer but not much of a Winter Ale. I do not understand how this won a gold medal.
