Commercial Description:
Each year, when people are starting to unpack their winter clothes and replenish their firewood, our tiny brewery in the coastal redwoods of Northern California makes seasonal preparations of a different kind. As the cold arrives, we release a unique beverage created to add warmth to even the coldest and darkest of winter's days. Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale begins with a very high original gravity to create a hearty and spicy brew with a deep amber hue and a smooth finish. Anderson Valley Brewing Company wishes you the very best for the holiday season and the New Year.

Bottle served. Pours a clear, copperish red with a light tan, foamy head which reduces quickly and leaves minimal lacing. A touch of butterscotch and vanilla are in the aroma. The butterscotch remains in the taste along with caramel and a little graininess. Any hop bitterness is not that evident, but there is an off sweet astringency in the finish. The summer was interesting, the winter is not, according to this bottle.

Clear red-copper with big, foamy beige head / Sugary nose / Light to medium body, moderately sweet and syrupy, with good finish / Toasty flavors of hazelnuts, sugar syrup, nutmeg, cinnamon, and toast / A different winter flavor profile, but very nice.

Dark amber pour with some white head that leaves a ring around the glass. Roasty, fruity aroma. Lots of vanilla in the flavor, some spice. A bit too sweet. Its pretty good.

A very hoppy and potent winter. Mixes well with the spices, so has bite versus insipid sweetness. Also a hearty ABV.

Pours a deep amber color with a nice lasting and lacing tan head. Roasted malt and fruit in the aroma, along with a touch of spice and vanilla. Nice fruit and caramel flavors, with a touch of spice and alcohol. Not bad.

2008 version bottle from three sons. Clear Amber with modest dirty tan head and good lacing. Modest hop odor, quite sweet with vanilla marshmellow initial tastes. Sweetness lingers. Carbonation is just a tad too high. Spices are not prevalent. 2009 version much better with hints of chocolate, molasses, and a little smoke and plenty of malts

Had a 12oz. bottle of this at the Bistro the other day. Pours a dark amber with little head and no lacing. Medium to full-bodied. Aroma has hints of raisin and plum, grapefruit, roasted malt, and spices. It has enough hops to balance the initial sweetness of the malt. Fruity element to the taste also. Sharp and tangy finish, spices show up a little more now. Dry and creamy mouthfeel. Pretty good holiday type beer another solid entry from a stand up brewery.

beautiful ruby/russet color with a think, dense, well developed foam. Aroma of metal, medicine and malt. The flavor is of chocolate and some kind of "natural" fruit essence. Blech. Full, chewy mouthfeel. I was lost at the medicinal fruit flavor. A definate disappointment.
