Commercial Description:
Each year, when people are starting to unpack their winter clothes and replenish their firewood, our tiny brewery in the coastal redwoods of Northern California makes seasonal preparations of a different kind. As the cold arrives, we release a unique beverage created to add warmth to even the coldest and darkest of winter's days. Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale begins with a very high original gravity to create a hearty and spicy brew with a deep amber hue and a smooth finish. Anderson Valley Brewing Company wishes you the very best for the holiday season and the New Year.

Bottle (2004 vintage). Hazy orange colour, small white head. Aroma is very toffeeish, some berries and slightly caramel malts and hoppy. Flavour is a real fudge bomb along with orange, vanilla and some hops. A very nice beer!

clear amber, thin beige head, sweet fruity and spicy, only a hint of the cinamon, spices are well blended and hard to pick out which makes for a really nice profile

Beautiful beer, moderately hopped with the spices (fruit, vanilla(?)) blending nicely with the bitterness.

(Bottle) Pours a dark brown body with mahogany highlights and an average-sized off-white head. Aroma of fruit cake and winter spices. Flavor of sweet malt, nutmeg, raisins, maple syrup, and a hint of cinnamon and other spices. Moderately sticky mouthfeel.

Vintage 2002. Poured a dark, hazy amber color with a large, frothy, off white head. Malty smells. Light tastes - malty and sweet. Tastes are too light for me to really pick anything specific, other than some sweetness out. Not sure if it lost some aroma and tastes in the aging process (tasted 2002 vintage on 6/29/04). Not bad but then again, nothing special stood out.

Murky copper, fully diminishing head. Barky and nutty malts suffer from a vanilla sweetness that takes the flavor lead. Very sweet in mouth too, faint floral aspects procure no balance, the malts come out grainier and grainier with each sip while cinnamon or another sweetish spice contributes more sweetness. Kinda one-dimensional for a spiced seasonal offering. Light-medium bodied, effetcive carbonation gives the impression of a better attenuation. I might have kept it a bit too long, it’s a 2004 bottle bought fom Julio’s last march. No oxidation flavors per se, but definitely some tame aspects, mostly the hops which are dull and unbalancing.

06 Winter Solstice-12oz bottle-pours a thin retaining light tan head and copper color. Aroma is sweet medium malt-caramel, medium fruit-cherry, faint spices. Taste is sweet medium malt-caramel, medium fruit-cherry, faint spices, then overpowered by metallic/spicy hops. Finish is metallic. Medium body. OK effervescence.
