Commercial Description:
Angel City Dunkel is our newest beer, a rich dark lager. Brewed with six different malts, Angel City Dunkel is seamlessly smooth where even the hops take a back seat to the upfront rich dark malt flavors. Not unlike a porter or stout, Angel City Dunkel is a brew worthy of deep contemplation.

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark brown. fizzy quickly diminishing head. Chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, nuts, hint of berries, and odd sour off-taste. Mouthfeel is watery. Not very good.

On tap. Color was very dark with a light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, nuts and fruit. Flavor was strange; chocolate and nuts; reminded me in a weird way of chocolate strawberries, but in a bad way. A bit watery. Strange.

Stoutl laiden with slight metal aroma, but in a nice way. Look is just fine, dark with a creamy head. Initial good tingle on the tongue. Taste is rather well behaved and friendly. Interesting tange constantly lurks on the left side of the tongue. This beer is a good experience. Dunkle, dunk good. Mild choco and dark background. Good friendly finish, not much bitter bite in this one. Easy to enjoy. Likable. Big thanks to cquiroga, enjoyed fully!

Pours with a largish, light brown head over an extremely dark brown near black body. Good lace. Aroma of spicy hops, toffee, chocolate and nuts. Overall pretty sweet. Taste is sugary with nuts and light coconut. Not offensive in anyway. A bit thing and too fizzy. Overall its an okay beer.

Never have been impressed with this brewer, but was able to get a bottle for $1.99, so what the hell. Pours clear brown with a medium tan head. Weak grainy aroma with a tiny bit of nuts and baker’s chocolate. Taste is equally weak. Cocoa, caramel, smoked almonds and grain, but in such quantities you would think this is a light beer. Skip it.

04-Apr-07 (22 oz bottle: $2.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) Another fresh bottle, pretty much one year later, with pretty much the same results. Dunkels aren’t supposed to taste tart like this so this simply cannot be the brewer’s intended result, but nevertheless, I find this beer strangely enjoyable. Quite simply, this is very toasty sour dough bread, only in liquid form. Somewhat fruity, hints of tart cherry and yellow citrus. Minimal bitterness. Really, nothing different from the previous bottle, and that’s remarkably consistent for what I would have assumed to be a brewing mistake.

17-Apr-06 (22 oz bottle: $2.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) A brand-new product in my BevMo, delivered directly by the brewery to our door, placed immediately into the cooler, then to my fridge. This beer has an aroma of soured fruit and decaying leaves, yet somehow, it doesn’t smell foul to me. It’s pleasant in an odd way. Some funk, some sour cherry, tart citrus, and even some chocolate in there too. The earthy flavor is fairly tart, but again, kind of in that sour cherry and barrel-fermented way. The underlying dark malts are very toasty and are not lost completely, but do seem to fade quickly in the finish. Body is medium and carbonation is moderate, with the sourness keeping the palate refreshed nicely. Fairly cloudy, medium brown in color. The tan head rises to just over half an inch, gradually settling to a filmy layer with a wide ring. Spotty lacing is left on the glass. I know this is an infected bottle, but this is one of those rare cases where I don’t think the infection is necessarily a bad thing. For all I know, this could be a really boring Dunkel that the infection has turned into something more interesting. It’s one of those beers that tastes bad, but good at the same time. I will, of course, have to try a new one at a later date... (6, 3, 6, 3, 12 = 3.0)

22oz bottle from BevMo! Mission Valley. A thin dunkel with a clear brown body and a rapidly diminishing white head. The aroma is caramel with a light touch of roasted barley. The flavor is the requisite caramel malt with the non-requisite apple tartness. It finished on a bitter-sour note.
