Poured a reddish ruby hued brown with a foamy, bubbly topped pale tan head that settled into a thin, slightly sudsy lacing, minimal amount of sticking.
Aromas of cocoa, light coffee, nutty, brown bready and a dark fruitiness.
Steady moderate carbonation and a crisp, velvety smooth, thin medium bodied mouthfeel.
Tastes of coffee with a dash of cocoa and sweet caramel, roasted salty nuts, a dark berry fruitiness that adds a little sourness, the hops are pretty subdued, a soft chocolate maltiness emerges towards the end and a fruity, sweet malty finish.
Not bad, the best beer I’ve had so far for Angel City, an easy drinkability, worth trying.

| 1.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 4/20 | Dec 30, 2006 Bomber. Body is a cloudy ruddy brown with a creme brule looking tan head that is mostly diminishing. The aroma is like chocolate toast mashed into a mush and allowed to sour in the hot sun. This smells wonderfully unappealing.

Fore is sour and tart with some sweeter malt beneath and mild chocolate/cheery flavors that without that infected sour flavor might actually taste good. Don’t waste your money like I did. Headbanger (1588), Aurora, Illinois, USA
| 1.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 2/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Sep 3, 2006 22oz bomber- A dark brown in color with a head that disspated quickly. Has an aroma of malt with a sourness. Taste sour and then gets more sour. Another infected bottle or this is the way there beer is turning out? Bad tasting. Would be interesting to try again. jimhilt (1680), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 2, 2006 Pours a two finger light brown head that fades quickly leaving a trace of lace. Cloudy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Woody nose. Starts sweet/sour, fizzy cherry flavor, sour fruit finish. Different dunkel, all I was expecting was a dark lager. $2.99 for a 22oz bottle from Hi-Time Cellars Costa Mesa, Ca.

| 1.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 1/10 | 3/5 | 3/20 | May 17, 2006 22 oz bomber. This one had to be infected because if this is what they were trying to accomplish I am down right horrified. The first thing to hit you in this dark brown murky brew is a sour mucky basement smell with some wet cardboard thrown in for good measure. The flavor is pure pickling juice backed by sour rye. Scary! RAYBOY01 (1834), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 1.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/20 | May 16, 2006 Another infected bottle, I assume, because no one would go out of their way to actually deliberately try to brew something that tastes like this, right? Tart, lactic sourness, some malt sweetness as well...but a drain pour all the way. Please try and get the bottling problems corrected...you’re killing me over here! beerguy101 (3920), Newark, California, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Apr 20, 2006 Note: Notes are for a possibly infected bottle. This dunkel pours a deep brown color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. Aroma is slightly lactic and fruity, really sweet and sour. A medium bodied dunkel. Malts are lactic/sour and fruity sweet. Touch of caramel malt. Hops are slightly floral and earthy. This is the 2nd bottle of beer is a row I’ve tasted from this brewer. I hope it not yet another instance of a small brewer with a horridly bad bottling line. Bought 4 different beers that were delivered directly from the brewer to the beer store and 2 of them were off, the other two were very tasty. Behind all that lactic sourness is a nice sweet malt backbone. Again I will have to try this one gain some time. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is sour. | 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Apr 12, 2006 Pours dark ruddy brown with a small tannish head that diminished quickly to a thin skin and a ring. Aroma is roasty malts, floral hops and tart summer fruit. The flavor of this one is roasty and tart, like bitter coffee with sour plum and floral hops. Medium body and gentle carbonation. I’d suspect that this bottle is infected, but I see from a previous rating that even on draft at the GABF this dunkel had a sour fruit aroma and taste. Still, this isn’t my ideal dunkel - not enough righ maltiness and overly sour for the style.
