Sweet caramel aroma with some pale malt. Sweet pale malt and light grain flavor with some floral hops. Alcohol is somewhat apparent but the sweetness makes it seem fairly unattenuated. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Syrupy grain for a nose, quite sweet. Flavor is similar, except alcoholic, medicinal, and bitter. Palate goes right along, rather oppressive and syrupy. More like a helles than a barley wine.

The aroma is very sweet, caramelized sugar, chewing gum, earth, apple, and papaya. The flavor is dusty, dirty, and very very metallic. There is some sweet brown sugar, corn husk, and staleness. Dry, papery finish with a soap-box aftertaste. No good, this. NachlamSie (1657), Tennessee, USA

What a wonderful surprise this one was. The pour is a barely hazy dark gold with a tall white head. I take a sniff. . . .WHAT? This is not a barley wine by my nose. It’s a cheap, canned gas station beer as far as I can tell. The aroma is sugary and reminiscent of a corny lager. Hints of apples and grains are found. I’m not too excited to taste this and to my dismay the flavor is way worse. It’s heavily metallic and dirty with lots of cheap grain character. This cannot be a barleywine. It is very, very astringent and hard to drink. I feel like I need to scrub the inside of my mouth. It reminds me of rust and corn. This has a definite malt liquor feel, though I’d like my malt liquors less metallic; I could even go for some more pronounced sugary sweetness if it would spare me the astringency. I really cannot finish my glass.
