Commercial Description:
The romantic term "barley wine" is used for the beers with an alcoholic content similar to the one of the wine. Of color bronze, the Antares Barley Wine is a hard licorosa beer and maltose, with an intense frutado accent, that remembers white grapes to us, originating of leavenings.

(Bottle 33 cl) Hazy golden with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, butter and alcohol. Medium body with a low carbonation, some caramel notes and only a subdued bitterness in the finish. Very hot and boozy though. More of a Malt Liquor really. 290608

750ml given to me by Footy and shared with his favorite Republican Turbo. Decent bread and barley oat aroma. Orange body with big white foamy head. Flavors that stood out where wheat and dried fruits. Mouthfeal was sugary and sticky. Dry bitter on the finish. Thanks Rudy.

Pours muddy orange with a frothy head. Aroma is sweet and grainy. Flavour is not as sweet, a little alcoholic and a thin mouthfeel. There is an ok hoppy aftertaste.

750ml bottle from Secret Santa. Pours hazy with an amber color and a frothy medium head. The aroma is nothing to be excited about. Is that a corn sweetness I detect? The sweet aroma is fairly cloying. The aroma sets you up for the flavor, and it’s as good as the aroma let on. It’s actually a bit like a sweet malt liquor. Cloying sweetness with a touch of grainy caramel. Syrupy medium body and mouth feel. Nothing to seek out.

Very light and clear golden color with a small head that quickly dies. Nose mainly smells of manure, but also shows light traces of sweet malts. Flavor is very sweet, simple and light, devoid of much describable character. Light hints of rough, grainy malts, along with similar manure notes as in the nose. This has to be one of the worst BW’s out there.

RBESG08 grand tasting
So I DID have it. Funny enough, I didn’t remember having it after I’ve seen the empty bottle near the end of the tasting. Definitely not a thing to brag about. Murky orange colour. Malt, some soy sauce and alcohol in the nose. Sweet malty taste, with some eggs, bad graininess and alcohol. I really didn’t like it all that much it seems, which would explain why I chose to forget about it.

Sampled at the RBESG08 grand tasting. Cloudy orange with medium white head. Fruity and nutty with some herbal hops. Medium bodied and smooth. Nicely balanced. Perhaps not the most complex BW out there, but strangely underrated.
