savnac (394), Palmer, Alaska, USA Nov 3, 2009 On tap @ ABC Gettysburg. Dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, molasses, and roasted grains. Sweet dark malt base with loads of hop and roasted bitterness. Full body with mild carbonation and a thick mouth feel. Very good, heading into the Imp Stout category because of the dark roasty qualities. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Sep 20, 2009 2008 bottle. Poured rich, clear reddish-brown with a short cap of tan head. The aroma picked up toasted biscuits, redder fruits, and brown sugar surrounded by peppery alcohol, vanilla, and oak (I don’t think this was barrel-aged, but it certainly had some similar character).. warm and quite inviting. The flavor had sweeter caramel, a pinch of molasses, and more fruits at the core.. some smoke and warm-to-hot alcohol around.. long impression at the end, with more warmth coming back through the nose. Heavier-bodied on the palate, lacking carbonation at certain points where it needed some (it wasn’t close to flat, but the flow was a little off).. sticky and warm on the finish. This was very solid. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Sep 16, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark mahogany brown body with a thin tan head. Salty peat aromatic character with a light over ripe fruit and etoh. Chewy salty caramel malt with a hint of roasted malt and smoke. Very full bodied accented with a woody peat and vanilla. Great brew. hellbilly (1492), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jul 5, 2009 on tap in gettysburg...
pours a dark coffee color with an initial off white head which fades to still.
the aroma is quite vinous and rich... fruit/prunes/grapes, nuttiness-like coffee, caramel and roasty grain.
the palate is a touch sweet but spice, alcohol and a mild bitter finish help it out immensely. flavors of vanilla, red wine, candied nuts, coffee and lots of dark roast in between.
the body is medium as alcohol thins it to make it dangerous.
well put together stuff! 7/4/7/4/16/3.8
Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA May 24, 2009 This 2008 vintage (courtesy of Beerman6686, thanks again) pours deep clear amber with thin tan head. The aroma is a bit boozy, to be expected considering the youth of the beer and its ABV, followed by prunes, cherry compote and some sticky malts. The taste is full and rich with prunes, figs, cherries and a full load of malts and roast. To midway it gets a little grape jam like and sends this into richer and more complex territory. I get mild caramel rolling around in the background too. This is going to be frikin’ amazing with more time on the shelf (in fact, I’m putty this back onto my “wants” list). Plenty yum now. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA May 24, 2009 Bottle, courtesy of...Ibrew2or3? Dave brought a barley wine to a tasting?? Dark ruby brown pour, small amounts of lacing and no head. Big fruits in the nose, caramel, vanilla and some chalky chocolate, dry grain. Big sweet flavors of caramel and hops, some cotton candy. Full-bodied, balanced well, and hidden alcohol. douglas88 (1555), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA May 17, 2009 12 oz bottle thanks to machfive55. 2008 vintage. Pours a cloudy brown color with a light cream colored head. The aroma is interesting; fruity, rich malts, something akin to smoked peat as well. The flavor was nice; rich dry fruity malts, nutty flavors, dark fruity, again some smoke and earthiness. Very nice. A unique barely wine, more English than American. Beerman6686 (1263), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 6, 2009 This poured a dark red to brown color with a small off white head. Aroma was lots of slightly roasted malts, sweetness, and some dried dark fruit too. Flavor up front was sticky sweet, a bit fruity and spicey with a slight roastiness to it. Alcohol is a little apparent but still hidden pretty well for how strong this one is.
