savnac (394), Palmer, Alaska, USA Oct 21, 2009 On tap @ ABC Harrisburg. Deep amber/brown with a small tan head. Very smoky and roasty with a bit of spicy German hop and malt aromas. The smoke hits you first and then the malt sweetness comes in and a roasty bitterness. Very nice balanced smoked beer. roder60 (1019), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 3, 2009 Had 2 of these at the Gettysburg brewpub. Poured a nice clear brown amber with minimal bubbly offwhite head. Aroma is roasted malts, slight caramel sweetness and a bit of booziness. Flavor is a nice balance of sweet toffee and roasted bitterness with a good layer of smokiness that adds to but does not overpower the taste. Slight alcohol warming presence. Once of the best I’ve had there. Almost always happy with appalachian’s products. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 21, 2009 On tap, Harrisburg location. Pours a clear amber orange body with a small beige head. Nice smoky and heavy toffee malt on the nose with a bit of light roast coffee. The flavor is quite smoky and sweet, a great combo for my tastes. Nice heavy toffee malt, toasty, some burnt caramel, and a nice quaffable level of smokiness. Mouthfeel is full and fairly thick but not overly cloying or sticky. A little too fizzy on the carbonation maybe, but it’s not overly distracting. Very nice. Rauchbocks are awesome. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Jan 3, 2009 Draft at Gettysburg brewpub. Slightly smoked aroma. Lovely copper body, very little head. Flavor is appropriate smoked meat, medium sweet. Very good. hopson (591), Williamsville, New York, USA Oct 27, 2008 draft at brewpub- a nice example- not for everyone in terms of style choice, and this one kicks you at first with some liquidy smoke and bacon bbq pit smoke, but then it becomes a part of the beer rather than the predominant flavor- not a go to style for me, but not bad. Nejhleader (924), Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 1, 2008 wow this was surprising really good. has a nice strong smoked element to it, with a nice malt kick, tastes like a really well smoked lager. Miver (551), WillowStreet, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 15, 2008 Sampled at the ABC 11th Capital City Brew fest. Poured copper in color with a thin white head. Aroma is pretty subdued notes of lightly smoked malts, and bbq. Tastes of smoke, little bit of wood, with a nice malty base. Nicely carbonated, nice body. Very easy to drink. One of the highlights for me at the fest. f351c4v (404), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 14, 2008 On draught at the Camp Hill ABC. Rauchbier is one of my favorite styles, so I was pleased to see this beer on the list. Pours an amber color, with a small white head. Aroma is definitely smoked, but not overpowering, malty. Body is about right for this style, not thick, easy drinking. Some wood chips, smoked meats here, a nice malt character, just not in the leauge of Schlenkerla though. Could be more over-the-top on the smokienss, for me...
