Commercial Description:
A rich, dark, complex, full-bodied porter with hints of dark chocolate, raisins, black licorice, and currents on the palate, and a smoky, sour finish. Unlike conventional ales which go from fermenter to serving tank fully carbonated and under pressure, cask ales leave the fermenter flat, and are transferred to a cask along with unfermented malt. In the cask, the ale goes through a secondary fermentation which leaves it gently carbonated. Stored and hand pulled at cellar temperature (53 - 58 degrees).

sample a brewpub. Pours a deep dark brown. Smells and tastes of raisins and licorice. Doing this beer in the cask has made it a little thin and flat, allowing the licorice to overpower the taste.

Bottle (leftover from GABF) pored a clear brownish black with a minimal tan head. Aromas of esspresso, roastiness and hints of dark chocolate and vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of coffee, roasted malt, bitter chocolate and a hint of smoke with a lingering roasty bittersweet finish.

Deep dark brown with a full and creamy three finger head. A truly great looking beer. Alot of dark aromas in this. Deep roasted malts, dark chocolate, and dried fruits. A little too smoky for my tastes, and lost points because of it. Medium bodied and smooth in the mouth. A pretty good beer.

cask at brewpub - Pours black with a tan head. The aroma is mainly chocolate and roast malt. There’s lots of dark chocolate in the roast malt led flavor. It has a medium body and a sweet, creamy finish.

Deep brown, not quite black, a little thin looking with a slight, oily-brown head. Weak yet roasty aromas. Chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with mild vinegar notes. I don’t mind my Porters thin, but this was a little too thin. Unimpressive.

A keeper on cask here. Mocha head on top of very dark brown. Sessionable ABV. Well malted and the bias is on the sweeter side and so drinkable. Cocoa, coffee, mollasses, mild roastiness. Could have more aroma with all of these ingredients.

Pours a pitch black color with no head. Aroma and flavor of raisins and licorice with a smoky finish. The body is light with an oily texture and gentle carbonation. Good stuff.

Cask. Blck body with a medium-sized creamy mocha head. Smells roasty- milk chocolate, toffee caramel, toast, and faint sourness. Starts out interesting - chocolately with thin caramel malts and coffee bitterness. Some acidity is also present from the malts. Pretty good.
Tasted at the brewpub on December 27, 2006.
