Commercial Description:
A rich, dark, complex, full-bodied porter with hints of dark chocolate, raisins, black licorice, and currents on the palate, and a smoky, sour finish. Unlike conventional ales which go from fermenter to serving tank fully carbonated and under pressure, cask ales leave the fermenter flat, and are transferred to a cask along with unfermented malt. In the cask, the ale goes through a secondary fermentation which leaves it gently carbonated. Stored and hand pulled at cellar temperature (53 - 58 degrees).

pours a light brown head and black color. Aroma is dark malt-roasty, dark fruit. Taste is slightly sweet, dark malt-roasty, dark fruit-slight sourness. Minimum/no carbonation. Aftertaste-some dusty/coffee.

Light brown lasting head covers the very dark body, even for a porter. Smooth and smoky nose displays a plethora of dark malts in profusion. Highly roasty, it feels very stoutish in that sense. Smooth cask feel comes close to a 5 for mouthfeel, the finish lingers and carry on the strong, yet gentle and accessible roastiness. Slightly tart, kinda fruity (cherries), this doesn,t detract the other flavors and in fact contributes to the complexity and benefit the overall experience. Whiskeyish mild alcohol presence would have been out of place in most other porters, but feel right here. This is good stuff.

Cask at the brewery. Sweet nose of malted milk balls and dry grains, resembling a dry stout at times. Dark and oily, silky, very fine and quiet on the tongue, with a delicate motor oil silkiness and a light astringency to the roasted malts. Fairly good, and I think the cask adds a lot to this beer.

Draft at Arbor Brewing. Dark brown hue with a light brown head that diminished slowly. Complex good aroma of chocolate, smoke and sweet. Full body with creamy fuzzy texture. Good porter flavor with a long smooth finish.

Cask sample at the brewpub. The faintest hint of a foamy ring sits on a bed of utter darkness...a vinous, chocolaty pungency assails the nostrils and hints of raisins waft forward...extremely sweet is the creamy, pillowy soft body with raisins, dessert wine, sweet chocolate, a touch of orange liqueur, and just enough roastiness to keep it together and keep the teeth from rotting. A delight.

On cask of course. The body was black with a light khaki head. The aroma was almods and mocha with some milk chocoalte. The taste was light coffee with some sweet pears. There was also some strange stale caramel. The mouthfeel was very smooth. I was not very impressed.

Roasty, cocoa-like aroma with some suggestions of smoke and dark fruit. Opaque darkest brown body topped by a wispy tan head that lasts well. Dark fruit flavours with strong charred roastiness and light notes of alcohol. Medium body with creamy smooth texture and perfectly fitting low carbonation. Sampled on cask at the brewpub.
