Commercial Description:
A surprisingly easy-drinking dark ale with a medium body, malty palate and a smooth dry finish. Our alt is brewed in the tradition of the German "sticke" or "secret" alt which was a fuller, darker, and higher alcohol alt served unadvertised by German brewpubs at regular ale prices as a reward to regular customers who knew to ask for it.

on tap-pours a light tan head and black with red color. Aroma is medium/dark fruit, sweet medium malt. Taste is medium/dark fruit, sweet medium malt-although some burnt character and thinish body detracts, some spice.

Pours pretty much black with tan head. Smokey, malty aroma with a bit of musty sourness. Flavor is a bit smokey, a bit chocolatey and a tad burnt, with a little bit of sour fruit.I like the dry finish. Pretty good, I’d recommend trying it.

My first altbier. Poured a very dark, chocolatey brown with a thick tan head. Smells strongly of a pleasant maltiness with perhaps some sort of slight smokiness or chocolatey. The flavor is a great combination of chocolate and malt. It’s moderately carbonated and medium-bodied. A quite enjoyable beer that I would definitely recommend--and I would now also like to try it on tap!

Bottle. Black, translucent body with huge off-white head that lasts. The aroma is peaty with notes of roasted and burnt malts and smoke with a hint of sulphur. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter and moderately acidic. Finish is tart and dry. Medium body and watery texture. Lively carbonation. The tart finish throws me. Just not that enjoyable.

Goodbar Beer Club. Essentially black body, off-white head. Nose is astringent malt up front, kind of burnt doppelbock fruitiness. Flavor is chocolate burnt malt, light fruit, really nice dark malts, caramels, toffees. Like a great schwarzbier with a bit more intensity. Well done!

At the Corner Brewery. Dark brown/black with thick medium tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is roasty malt, hard to detect much else. Medium sweet, roasty flavor with lingering coffee. Medium bodied with a light sourness in there. In some ways reminds me of Arbor’s Espresso Love, but with a much better, drier finish.

Tasted 5/3/08. 12oz bottle. Hazy and rather opaque. Finger width of khaki head. Bready caramel toasty aromas. Medium bodied and tart. Tangy with fruity citrus effervescence. Touch cocoa. Mildly bitter and a touch burnt. Slightly too tart for pure enjoyment.

12 oz bottle. Pours brown with a creamy off white head that retains and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet sugary caramel and dark fruits

The flavor is is yeasty with some chocolate malt and some fruit. It has some acidic plastic and metallic bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery.

Overall, it kind of reminds me of Jolly Pumpkin’s Bam Noire, but not as good.
