Commercial Description:
A surprisingly easy-drinking dark ale with a medium body, malty palate and a smooth dry finish. Our alt is brewed in the tradition of the German "sticke" or "secret" alt which was a fuller, darker, and higher alcohol alt served unadvertised by German brewpubs at regular ale prices as a reward to regular customers who knew to ask for it.

Dark opaque brown pour with a small loose off-white head. Roasted malt aroma with lots of dark fruit and some sweet brown sugar. Flavor has thick lightly roasted malt backbone, some dark fruit, nuttiness, and maple. Chocolate and some spicy hops at the end. Medium body with a surprising dry and crisp lager-like finish. It’s very drinkable for how full the body and flavor is.

Bottle: Super foamy head with a deep reddish brown color . Definite caramel malt aroma with a light nuttiness to it, some light chocolate notes, and a sticky sugar bread aroma. Taste is...wait still waiting for the foam to subside..........Ok better. A light caramel maltiness and a very slight smoke taste to it. Maybe some oak and roasted goodness. Palate is surprisingly short and dry, but leaves a slight bitter tingle on the tongue. Overall, Besides the enormous head that I had to wait on it’s a pretty good beer. I haven’t had many Alt’s, but this is subtle and well crafted.

No aroma, little dots in the head. Some bitterness and decent for the style, but not the best I have had. Quaffable.

the beer is a deep rich brown, topped by frothy light tan foam. The glass is about eight inches high, with the initial pour being half beer, and half foam. Subsequent pours are quite foamy as well. Pretty good lacing. Nice rich and earthy aroma - sweet caramel malt, some chocolate, some maple. The flavor is drier and even more earthy, with maple, leather, bittersweet chocolate, and a hint of tobacco. Delightful chocolate finish and aftertaste. Medium body, gently but plentifully carbonated. Smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle (a touch oxidized)... Pours hazy black with a huge, frothy, lightly tanned head. Excellent, wispy retention. The earthy aroma is a blend of dust, light smoke and cocoa. The flavor is thin, lifeless and boring with some lightly bitter cocoa. Tastes like cocoa powder blended in water then served in a cardboard cup. Light-bodied and ashy with fizzy carbonation. Crisp, moderately bitter finish. Not horrible, just uninspiring.

12 oz bottle, thanks Schroppfy! Black color with a really nice head. The aroma is very clean and lager0like as expected. Some roast is detectable in the aroma. The flavor is pretty roasty with a good amount of bitterness. It’s very smooth with a medium to thin body. After visiting Dusseldorf last year, it’s a very good representation. Good beer.
