Commercial Description:
A surprisingly easy-drinking dark ale with a medium body, malty palate and a smooth dry finish. Our alt is brewed in the tradition of the German "sticke" or "secret" alt which was a fuller, darker, and higher alcohol alt served unadvertised by German brewpubs at regular ale prices as a reward to regular customers who knew to ask for it.

It’s Back! I first had this beer several years ago when I first moved to Ann Arbor and loved it dearly, but they went a season or two without it and I went into withdrawal. Now Old 22 is back with a vengeance, a warm rich toasty malt, an inceribly silky feel, and a delightful floral bite at closing. A truly amazing beer.

The true genius of ABC is in this beer. It’s a great pub regardless, and my favorite lunch spot in Ann Arbor, but this beer makes it all the more special.

On tap at Arbor Brewing Company. Worth the wait - Hennes and other supporters of this Alt are right in their nearly rapturous beliefs about it - it is all traditional Alt in it's smoky woody look, feel and taste - perfect malting. Just a hint of prune hidden deep inside. An incredibly crisp and dry hop finish takes it a tad far afield in the style category, but a delight - I plan on making a session as they now sell sixes!!

Darkened cedar. Spongy light tan foam. Airy aroma of hazelnuts, subtle roastiness, tobacco, perfume, leaf, wood, plum, straw, and a touch of yeast. Vague notes of apple, chocolate, and assorted herbs. Earthy and lightly phenolic. Medium-bodied. carbonation. Delicious initial earthy flavors followed by a teaish, leafy twang, which is offset by light shades of cocoa and butterscotch. Traces of metal and tobacco find their way into the mix. Leafy hop persistence and mild residual fruitiness at the finish with clean, but evident, yeast overtones. Late countering act of chocolate, peach, and persimmon. Muted medicinal, oxidized flavors. It’s a delicious Alt, and certainly a unique spin on the style, with its high level of esters. The cocoa/chocolate notes and delicate malt underlay were dead-on. Thanks, Prof!

the beer is a deep rich brown, topped by frothy light tan foam. The glass is about eight inches high, with the initial pour being half beer, and half foam. Subsequent pours are quite foamy as well. Pretty good lacing. Nice rich and earthy aroma - sweet caramel malt, some chocolate, some maple. The flavor is drier and even more earthy, with maple, leather, bittersweet chocolate, and a hint of tobacco. Delightful chocolate finish and aftertaste. Medium body, gently but plentifully carbonated. Smooth mouthfeel.

Great Alt ale. Chocolately taste with just enough hops. Mouthfeel is very smooth. Could have several pints of this in no time.
