Pours hazy reddish brown. The aroma is pepper, zest, plum, and yeast. The flavor is honey, sage, and light caramel. The finish is slightly carbonic, maybe even tannic. Not my favorite interpretation of the style. presario (2996), Calgary, Alberta, Canada
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Mar 11, 2007 Trade with kmweaver. Big bottle shared with my son. Dusty copper with a thin lasting head. Layer of brown sediment left in the bottle. Light malt aroma. Breath deep and you catch notes of alcohol and orange. Brown sugar almost maple syrup flavour. Doesn’t taste like 8% although there is an mild alcohol presence and a hint of Buckley’s cough syrup.. Suttree (2739), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 11, 2007 Cloudy brown, decent white head. Nutty, alcoholly aroma, plus a hint of rotting fruit (not in a entirely horrible way, though) Some woodsy, piney notes in the flavor. Seems a bt too understated, which seems out of place in a Old Ale called "Big Dick’s". Oddly, it actually seems to lose character as it warms. NachlamSie (1644), Tennessee, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 10, 2007 Bottle sampled with the fine gentlemen at the Knoxville Spring(ish) tasting. Oh, our modern interpretations of Old Ales are all over the map. I was hoping for something pretty good here. Starts out with a hazy brown pour with no head and quick, spotty lacing on the walls of the snifter. The aroma is very rich of fresh plums and vegetal tones with a buried meatiness. This is much lighter on the palate than I had expected with some unpleasant metallic, vegetal overtones. Some dry, vinous, grape flavors come through and a dash of chocolate. This is par at best. | 1.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Mar 5, 2007 Pours brown with a small head. Aroma is terrible - malt and stinky feet, as has been said before. Initial tastes were promising. I made it about half way through a 650ml bottle before giving up. When I poured it out a bunch of sugar had settled to the bottom. Do not waste your time with this beer. kwoeltje (1322), Manchester, Missouri, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Mar 4, 2007 (bottle) Brown with hints of red. Off white head fades quickly. Aroma is sweetish malt and vegetables. Flavor is some malt, and again with the vegetables. Can’t say I analyzed it too much - I poured it out after a few sips. blankboy (3214), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Feb 27, 2007 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry & GregClow -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Man, what a cheesy label. Pours a murky ruby-brown with an average size diminishing off-white head. Mild aroma is malty, fruity and toasty with some brown sugar and chocolate -- pretty nice. Flavour of dark malt, light hops, a little toasty and, whoa, there’s the booze -- I didn’t expect that from the aroma. Watery body, too thin for the style. Started off well but it was ultimately disappointing. jonwayne4883 (401), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
