Some malt back bone, but really, it’s all about showcasing bourbon. It’s not that it’s a bad beer, but I really can’t get anything other than bourbon. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 29, 2006 Quite Fizzy here, Very huge tan head. Black/brown body. Nose had trace of medicine. Wow! This is all burbon. Way over the top. Not much balance. Lots of alcohol. Quite puzzling, I have another to age and rerate. Glouglouburp (2887), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Aroma has some vegetables (pickles!?!) with old wood and more alcohol than it should. Taste was slightly oxidized with some ripe vegetables and beans. It was somewhat saved by some brownies and nuts flavours. Medium body, medium carbonation. Really didn’t do it for me. This Shipwreck is a trainwreck. moejuck (1172), Ohio, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 24, 2006 I was blown away by this one--wish I would have purchased more when it was available. Aroma--if you’ve ever stuck your nose in a bourbon barrel then you woule recognize that as the aroma of this beer. Black with a huge tan head. The palate is very full for a porter. Great bourbon flavor without all of the heat you get in many BA brews. Lots of yummy vanilla and oak. Fantastic brew. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA

22 oz bomber
Moderate pour in an English pint
Recent bottling, wrecked 11/06
Poured black, with clear ruddy brown highlights, with a light brown frothy mostly lasting head.
Smelt of strong bourbon, charred wood, burnt sugar, dark coffee roast, light vanilla.
Taste was upfront strong bitter sweet burnt wood and light sweet dark chocolate and vanilla followed by harsh burnt wood and moderate sweet molasses on a moderate ashy finish. Palate was medium to full bodied, lively carbonated, oily, and moderately astringent.
Overall, this porter carries the taste of bourbon wood exquisitely. The strong taste does hide other subtle notes, though. Sammy (4070), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 18, 2006 This rating based on having most of my own bomber not aofoxxy sample from the glass. A serviceable porter, a bit leaning on the weak mouth side, overriden by the bourbon and woody taste. I would have liked to taste this not bourbon barrelled. thedm (3837), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 18, 2006 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a very large sized head of foamy fine to medium sized bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a opaque typically carbonated dark brown colored body. The aroma was vinous brown malt and burnt malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of vinous dark malt brown malt vanilla oak and bourbon. A wonderful best in class brew.
