drowland (1360), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 16, 2009 Probably my least favorite DIPA of those I’ve tried, but a pretty good beer. Methinks I sense some diacetyl, which shouldn’t be happening in this style! Duhast500 (176), , Massachusetts, USA Aug 6, 2009 Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.
The color is a cloudy orange with a thick off-white head with some really nice lacing.
The smell is surprising, hoppy but in a different way than expected. Some nice hints or floral hops and and some citrus hops but also something a bit different that is hard to describe
The taste is orange flavor at first, some really nice hop bitterness with a great sweet malt feel with some hints of clove and other spices.
The hop feel is not too strong which contributes to the lighter mouthfeel to this beer than expected. Has a nice medium body and is easy drinking for a double IPA.
ljay6880 (132), , Pennsylvania, USA Jul 31, 2009 12 OZ bottle served in a tulip glass. Pours a ruddy amber with two fingers of thick foamy off-white head. The head slowly dissipates and leaves nice lacing. Nose is caramel, hops (though not as much as I expected for a DIP), malts, and perfume. Taste is malts, caramel, and hops with a wet, bitter finish. A pretty tasty, balanced ale. It really didn’t seem much like a DIP though. jamesawoodward (2), New York, USA does not count Jul 29, 2009 Does not taste like an ipa - tastes more like a malty carbonated beer. No strong hop flavor, definitely not a double ipa (or at least not to my liking). jimhilt (1663), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Jul 17, 2009 Pours a three finger cream head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Cloudy amber color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Grapefruit nose. Flavor is grapefruit hops almost balanced with caramel malts. Higher ABV is totally hidden. $3.00 for a 12oz bottle from Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, Me.
obguthr (986), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Jul 8, 2009 Splendid bouquet of caramel and hops, all the citrus fruits are there. Murky ochre color with a thick peach colored head. Medium bodied with fruity esters, like jolly ranchers, but considerably less sweet. Cherry, lemon, orange, and perhaps a bit of fig. Piney bark finish. Tasty and well hopped, but probably well below 60 IBUs. I think I like it better that way. darkguardian (506), Florida, USA Jul 8, 2009 Another bottle from Kevin. This is a solid beer but its not really so much of a DIPA as a somewhat hoppy barley wine. Nose is lightly hoppy but dominated by caramel malt. Some light grassy hops in the flavor as well but here again layers of caramel and tofee. The malt is really quite nice but this is nowhere near hoppy or bitter enough to be a DIPA. But this is still a very drinkable beer. kimcgolf (822), Dacula, Georgia, USA Jul 7, 2009 Not a bad beer, but somewhat disappointing for a DIPA. Pour was ornge-red, with a nice off-white head and decent lacing, but the strong citrusy grapefruit hops (that I’ve come to love in the style) are missing from the nose, and not much more noticeable in the taste. The mouthfeel is a nice bitter-sweet blend of malts and hops, and the finish long and pleasant, but this is just not up to DIPA standards.
