Commercial Description:
The first in our Brew Crew Big Beer Series, Arcadia Hopmouth Double IPA should be finding its way to a store near you. Huge Maris Otter malt and a generous amount of fresh hops combine to make this extremely balanced ale remarkable.

Pours a murky, copper-orange color with medium carbonation and a very big, thick, frothy, off-white head that reminds me of meringue pie. Aroma has a very sweet note to it from the malt with citrus and a tropical fruit scent. The Marris Otter does come through first in the flavor but the hops quickly takes over giving a citrus, grassy bitterness and finishes with a real strong lemon tea flavor. The mouth feel is decent, alcohol is hidden well and my cold beer was way over carbonated, I could not pour more than a about 3 tablespoons of beer before it would foam up big. Overall, the head retention on this beer as well great, the head created was great but the flavor was just okay.

Draft: Pours a dark bronze with a sizeable white head. Nose was big on the grapefruit with some additional notes of pine, peach and some light malts. Medium-full bodied...flavor is sharp and bitter, the citrus comes through nicely but their seems to be something missing. Not very resin-y or piney, the hoppy finish is almost earthy and seems to throw this thing out of whack.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Hazy amber color. Sweet and strongly hoppy aroma with apricot, mango and grapefruit. Very hoppy bittersweet flavor with grapefruit, apricot and chewy maltiness. Good hop aroma, a bit too chewy.

On tap at Mr Goodbar, Buffalo NY. Pours dark orange maroon. Aroma had a wierd chemical hop thing going on which seemed to dissapate as the pint went down. The first initial sips also has the wierd buring plastic taste but as it I continued it let. Then it seemed like english hop bomb. Dcent DIPA but Ive had better

THOUGHTS: Not all that great. Very artificial hops aroma and chemical hop flavor. Hid alcohol fairly well. One of the first DIPAs I haven’t liked. The flavor grew on me a little as it warmed, but it was still not that great. I just really didn’t like this one, even though I do think Arcadia usually brews nice beer. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium, brownish orange with a large, creamy, off-white head that mostly diminished, but left excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate malt, heavy pine, resin and orange hops, alcohol, medicine, Band-aid, soap and chemical. The flavor started out sweet and finished very sweet and bitter (cloyingly sweet and almost an earwax bitterness) with a long duration. There was caramel, piney hops and a little orange, chemicals, Band-aid, and sorta soapy. The medium to full body was syrupy and sticky on the lips with tingly carbonation.

On draft at Donnely’s, Fairport, NY. A huge noseful of hops on initial sniff. The hops are good, but what is even better is the malts. More balanced than most imperial DIPA’s. The alcohol is a bit weak for a double - in my opinion they should range from 9%-12%. Great beer, and what a bargain at $4 a 16oz draft. Good stuff.

12oz bottle (thanks Gurst!). Pours a hazy copper color with a thin and lacy off-white head. Aroma is very well-balanced, with notes of hops, spices, caramel, roasted malt, and fruit. Taste is creamy and full, with initial flavors of apple, citrusy hops, and alcohol mellowing out into a tart finish of spices and juniper. More balanced than most other IIPAs, and with good results.
