Home late at night – Watching Sox pull rug out from under Mariners, followed by Elvis Night singers and fireworks – can’t stop talking like a Paul Newman Spaghetti Sauce label - Need a ig bottle of beer when I get home, ’cause only $6 Lites at ballpark – grab this one – pours big foamy head, deep copper IPA body – smell still has nice big hop, but it’s just starting to get stale. Definite big hop taste. Fresh hops still involved, some northwest pine, with humus and white pepper, and just plain bitterness. Large alcohol tally from lots of malts. This one’s pretty rough and could never be a newbie’s gateway beer. But hop heads will want to paste this stamp in their albums. I’d suggest trying this after its aged somewhat (date code on the label’s side is not notched), though that may lose a lot of the fresh hop taste that gives it its initial oomph. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 9, 2007 22 Oz Bottle. Aroma flows forth with hops in mountain floral and desert plant musk. Soapy and with resin and bits of caramel. Somewhat laid down. Deep amber and orange pour, with a rising rocky foam of many fingers a tannic ivory. Flavor carries a strong sweet malt and some light hop flavor, but not much else. It’s like a Double IPA with the volume turned down low and hard to hear. I can see what’s trying to happen, but the hoppiness doesn’t show through. There’s residual sweetness in tangerine and malt sugar, then a wisp of non-descript citrus and pine, but not nearly strong enough for a double IPA. Pleasent and clean, with only minimal bubblegum yeast esters in the background, with heat not present. Just not enough bitterness nor hop flavor for this to be an IIPA. Not knowning, I would have called this an APA or a weak IPA. Eek. Looks like the hops went to head retention. Finishes dry and soapy. Thanks Shaun! mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 16, 2007 Courtesy Fantomas23. Pours a pretty dark amber with a light white head. Somewhat hazy. Very interesting smell for a double IPA. You get the hops at first but the longer you smell it becomes spicy, almost like some sort of Mexican food. Very unique. Pretty big hoppy taste up front, but mellows out towards the end, but develops a certain sweetness to it. Pretty smooth for a double IPA, and the hops werent ungodly overpowering which was pleasant. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Even though this is my favorite style, I have been playing the field lately. I am married to DIPA’s and the rest of the beers are mistresses. After coming back to the wife after countless trists, I see why I married her. Man is this a hoppy beer. Had the aroma been better it would have been well into the fours. The pour is a beautiful orange with a 2 finger head that just won’t quit hangin’ on. This may sound odd, but the aroma was ginger ale. The taste was all hops with a tad of malt at the end to let you know it’s hanging on. Chalk up another great beer for Arcadia! thegreenrooster (1846), St.louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 22, 2007 Pour is a hazy copper with almost no head. Aroma is a very deep dark citrus hop with some earthyness and malt. Flavor is outstanding. This sucker is all about the hops. Very citrus, grapefruit with a piney after taste. Very clean and fresh. Super tasty and a good sipper. SDbruboy (1832), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Nov 17, 2007 22 oz. bottle from moejuck, thanks man! Pours cloudy amber-chestnut color with a large and fluffy beige head. Aroma of toffee, citrus and pine forest. Flavor is interesting tart and a bit bready, toasty notes, pine, lemon peel and fresh bitter herbs and evergreen oil in the finish. Medium to full body and smooth carbonation. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 27, 2006 Very large dense head of light tan bubbles. Litle rocky on top. Light carbonation. Very good head retention. Nice hoppy aroma loaded with grapefruit and pine. Succulent with a hint of roastyness buried in there. Nice bright dark orange. Slick mouthfeel that seems slightly flat but can’t be because of all of the carbonation. Little on the sweet side. Decent hops presence but not as much as in the aroma. Some honey and bitter grapefruit. Little puckering. Bit of dry roastyness at the finish. Alcohol is hidden very well. A pretty good IIPA. Maybe need to age a little bit longer. thornecb (1812), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 16, 2008 Pours hazy amber into a snifter. Off-white pancake head leaves sheet lacing as it slowly recedes. Mild citrus and resin aromas. Crisp, well-balanced caramel and pine. Sharp finish. More like an American strong. I like the lack of sugar.
