Pours a dark brown color with a huge 4 finger thick light tan head. Didn’t even pour the whole bottle. The sucker won’t go down. Once the head started to settle, it left some nice lacing. Aroma is chocolate and roasted malt, and slight oxidation. Flavor is also chocolate and roasted malt with just a hint of smokiness. Smooth bitterness. Medium to full body. A very nice beer. Aroma of chocoff, roasty dark malt, molasses, hazelnut, ovaltine. Tastes smoky roasty malty, with chocoff, almond, and some fruit and mild hop notes. Complex and very well balanced, this is a top notch porter. Mrthirstyneck (341), Minnesota, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 16, 2007 12 oz bottle. Almost black with a toasty tan head. Bourbon raisins and burnt sugar. Strong bitter punch hammers the palate. Oily; grape, molasses and Baker’s chocolate. Coffee and tobacco enter with drying. Sticky medium body, light carb. A little harsh for me. cathcacr (590), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 10, 2007 My latest entry in a long-well-deserved binge on this previously-overlooked style. May have been the sedimenty bottle, but it poured a massive, lasting head. This one is not sweet, but decidely roasty-smokey, even "woody" in the same vein as Great Lakes Edmund Fitz. That also means a thick body and full not-smooth finish. I think I prefer this style sweeter. Check that. I am getting sweetness as I proceed down the glass. Nice balance!

This dark brown ale poured with a rich creamy tan head, with a chocolate malt aroma. The chocolate does, indeed, dominate the flavor, but it complements the nice smoky porter base. There is a chalky, slightly bitter finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 6, 2007 Bottle (12oz). Deep ruby-brown pour, small creamy tan head. Sweet roast malt aroma, light vanilla and cinnamon spice, dry yeast in abundance, hints of celery, with some chocolate as it warms. Taste - now that’s nice, what a porter should be - roast malt, bit of licorice, dry cocoa, light dry spicy yeast, herbal hops and some alcohol warmth as it warms, nice and lactic. Solid mid-range porter body, mild carbonation, hints of acidity and astringency in the mouthfeel, but mostly silky and malty - very, very good.
