Commercial Description:
Our Smoked Porter is a robust London style porter with a deep chocolate/ruby color and the subtle accent of hardwood smoked malt. This distinctive beer is brewed using no less than seven different varieties of premium European malted barley, resulting in a complex and full bodied beer characterized by hints of chocolate, coffee, caramel and beechwood smoke. The big malty finish to this beer is balanced by a solid hop bitterness and the refined English aroma and flavor of premium Goldings finishing hops.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown with a creamy thin tan head that dissipates quickly and laces the glass slightly. Aroma was coffee and chocolately malt I did not detect any smoke character. Nice roast character some sweet notes pretty basic. Medium bodied with a dry roast lingering aftertaste.

on tap at a local bar. Black pour with a very minimal (likely the result of a poor bar tender’s poor) tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and smoke. Flavor was dominated by roasted malt, smoke, tobacco, and molasses. Smooth and silky medium body with minimal carbonation. Overall: a good gritty porter that is definitely worth trying. (RERATE) Bottled version this time. Dark brown, almost black. Pretty solid medium tan head. Solid aroma, but a bit of soy in there (the worst possible quality for my palate). Same with flavor. Its solid and tolerable, but riding that soy verge. Not as good as I remember it being on tap but good.

12 ounce bottle, warm from the shelf because I forgot to put it in the fridge, in pint glass. Dark brown/black with lasting light brown head. Earthy chocolate yeasty fresh aroma. Dark chocolate earthy dark fruit with mild smoke and underlying English bitterness. Very smooth, nice mouthfeel. Medium body. medium-low carbo. Deceptively strong. Excellent.

Deep brown in colour with a large and lingering tan coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is starting to turn a bit to the sour side, very light roast, some chocolate sweetness. The flavour is roasty, creamy and sweet, milk chocolate, sugar with some very light sourness but nowhere near what was in the aroma. Mildly biiter and roasty mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes with a lingering roasty bitterness.

Not bad, this bottle might be a bit old but I opened it only a couple months after buying it. Another reason for brewers to start dating bottles.

355ml bottle from the Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York.
Opened on March 2 2008.
No date.

Dark brown with an extra large tan sudsy head, slowly dissipating. Aroma of sweet malt, roasted malt, coffee and mild hops. Thick body contains roasted malt, coffee, peat and light chocolate. Decently balanced with a nice bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours a really dark brown body under a beige head. Sourish and funky nose, barnyard-like, with chocolate and some roasted malt and coffee. Funky flavors too, with a light citrus touch, as well as chocolate and coffee. Medium body with a little sourish touch. Judging from the other ratings, it seems the funk shouldn’t be there, but it was, and it was nice. Really nice. (080620)
