| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 20, 2006 Bottle. Poured a really deep amber with no head. smokey aroma, some oak. Subtle hints of scotch and caramel. Some scotch ale drinkers that I have spoken to have said that this beer was very mild in taste, if this was mild, I am not so sure I want to try anything else. It had a nice balance with minimal aftertaste. A bit on the sweet side. DrnkMcDermott (1861), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2006 Draft sampler at brewpub. Rating #998! Black in the deep part, with garnet highlights. It was in a sampler tray, so the head was gone by the time I got to this. Malts are a bit light in the nose, and that goes to the taste, too. Some ale fruitiness. I wouldn’t know about those roasted chestnuts they describe. I do know I get a slightly amped Scotch Ale bitterness, and a slight brandy burn that belies its stated abv’s. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 6, 2006 Pours ruby red with a tan head. Smells of soap, sugar, roses, some fruit. Tastes of chocolate and fruity. As it warms, more sweet maltiness shows up with a tanginess on the finish. milewide (618), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 30, 2006 I don’t like scotch ales. There, I said it. But this one wasn’t too bad. Complex and earth nose, not much head. Deep, deep amber. Very thick body. Raisons, nuts, and wine flavors. Needs a bit of aging. beastiefan2k (1605), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 28, 2006 I love to see recent ratings, really gives one a feel for where this beer just got distributed to. Well, I was excited to try it, I guess too excited. I’ll skip all the nonsense and get to the on thing that bothers me. Bean. Thats right once in a while I drink a beer and I get lots of bean. Recently I got it with Left Hand milk stout, really bad. This has a strong bean aspect in the aroma. Just turns me off. Not as bad as the gin beer I was just drinking but no fun. Also I love Scotch Ales and this seems like such a bad version of one. None of that roastiness, none of that no panties underneath the skirt maltiness I like. There is a pluminess in there, mixed with some more bean in the flavor but not enough good parts. Alcohol is well hidden, some sweetness, but not Scottish enough for me. I dont know, maybe its too young? I like to let my Scotch Ales sit a bit but this also seems too thin to age well. Who knows? Damn that bean. patrick767 (2051), fort wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 26, 2006 draft sampler at the brewery - Pours deep reddish-brown with a thin head. It has a sweet, malty aroma with some alcohol apparent. Rich caramel maltiness leads the flavor that’s complimented by a touch of dark fruit. A medium body, lightly carbonated, goes down well and this brew finishes with a hint of hops and mild alcohol burn.
