Chocolate, raisin, and sweet malt comprised the rest of the aroma. WIth tastes being quite similar, but with a nice addition of caramel. Done quite well. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Aug 10, 2005 Slightly murky ruby brown pour, with a rich creamy, faded tan head. Slightly bourbon, rice and port aroma. Flavor is mostly of slightly alcoholic plain caramel malt and brown sugar, backed with a peculiar but not unpleasant barbecue sauce note, a touch of ketchup, and some dusty malt. Palate is sugary, backed with a light butterscotch and raisin flavor. Alcohol dominates the backend and the aftertaste. Light nutty smack. Rastacouere (5553), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 28, 2005 Dark garnet to deep brown. Slight beige head. All about malt in the nose, oily nuts and marrying chocolate, almost vanilla-ish in its sweetness with the balancing earthiness, but lacking smokiness. More alcohol presence than expected that lingers alonga sourish nutskin/roasted malts dryness. Not much of a scotch ale ultimately, it has the adequate prune-like fruitiness, but the malt ain’t that complex. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 12, 2005 Dark, caramel brown color, small, fizzy head, soon dissolved.
Aroma is toffee and nuts, cola and little else. Sweet, nice enough.
Taste: chocolatey sweet, thick presence on the palate, but not too much so, in fact a bit lacking in character. A bit one-dimensional. Huge malt, mocha and cocoa, sweet and delightful, but not much beyond that.
Tasty, rolls easily off the tongue, long, gritty cocoa finish, fuller bodied.
A good tasting, easy drinker. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 5, 2005 On tap at the brewery. Deep yet translucent mahogany color with cherry accents. Aroma is oak, cedar, cardboard, bourbon and smooth vanilla. First taste is promising - full and robust. Cedar strikes with a piney sharpness, but it’s fuel for the fire of flavor. Some aspects that remind me of a good triple distilled Irish whiskey with the way the ABV resonates. Toasted pecans, sweet caramel and some wheat bread round out this World Beer Cup winner to an impressive experience. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA

Aroma of Caramel, Chocolate, Raisins, Bourbon, and Peat. Flavor is of raisins, caramel, and plums. Some smoky peat aftertaste lingers on. On the palate this is medium bodied yet somewhat watery for a beer this dark it seemed. Quite drinkable though. brewblackhole (1374), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA
