| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2008 Bottle from Beer Geek. Aroma of dark fruit and dark malt. A bit suggestive of an oporto. Deep garnet color with halogen, otherwise opaque black. A tan ring for head. The flavor is knock the socks off. Smoke, raisin, plum, malt and hop. This is heavy drinking material. Very full body with mild carbonation. They didn’t skimp on ingredients! iowaherkeye (1870), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 24, 2008 12oz bottle, no date. My label has a thistle instead of a shield. Nearly opaque reddish brown with a small beige head, fading to a ring before long. Aroma of some sweet raisins, scorched caramel and chocolate malts up front. Peated malt, salted nuts and light alcohol are a little more in the background. Flavor is saltier with some caramel and chocolate notes, a slightly off tang, and just a hint of the peat. Semi dry finish with bitterness around a 2. The alcohol is present, but not detracting at all. A little undercarbonated with a medium full body. One of the better Scotch ales that I’ve had of late. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 24, 2008 Aroma has a nice malt, lots of hops, plums and smoke, burgundy, with a small toffee head. Flavour is cream toffee, malt, some caramel too. Full bodied, very well balanced, great mouth feel. Terrific! Thanks mds. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 28, 2008 Pours deep red with a large off-white head. Interesting, candy-ish aroma: part cherry, part sweet malt, part root beer barrel hard candy. A bunch of anise in there, too, along with the more traditional smokiness and the CO2 of overcarbonation. The candy turns to black licorice as the beer warms. The flavor is nutty and fruity (plum, etc.), with that candy lingering in the background. Once the carbonation dies down, smokiness and a light hoppiness come out on the finish. Different, surely, but I’m not too sure about it. MrRain (433), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
