Commercial Description:
Starboard Stout is a unique Irish Oat Malt Stout. Deep black in color, with garnet undertones, it has a robust yet well-balanced chocolatey roasted malt character and a creamy mouthfeel. A subtle and complex hop flavor and aroma is provided by Willamette and Cascade.

Black pour and a thin orange brown head that rings. Aroma grabbed me and got my attention with a burnt toast and peppermint note. A light coffee ground aroma comes through too that is nice. Straightforward thin-bodied stout flavor. A touch of pineapple to the cocoa and coffee. It is much fruitier than I expected from a stout but it is not bad. Finish is primarily roast malt and cocoa. Dark brown body with a slender tan head and a slender aroma of roasted malt and a dash of chocolate to back it up. Thin for a stout, but the flavor picks up somewhat, adding roasted barley, caramel, and burnt brown sugar to the mix. Needs more of something.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Standard roasted malts are present. Chocolate and molasses are barely detectable. This one needs a bit more umph.

Middle-of-the-road type stout. Texture is creamy, but rather thin...and I detracted for that. Stouts, especially need to have big robust roundness of mouthfeel for me. Decent caramel/toffee/and molasses flavors and a lightly cereal oatmeal chewiness...but not enough of anything to really save it.

This beer excites the sense of smell with an aroma coffee and vanilla. It is a dark-dark brown color with a thick brown head. This beer enters the mouth thick and heavy but only produces a moderate coffee taste upon swallowing. It is a shame that this beer does so much to entice the senses of smell and sight then fails the sense of taste miserably.

Bottled. Almost black coloured. Light aroma with malt and chocolate notes. Sweet flavour with fruity notes. Soft mouthfeel. Light to medium body.

12oz - Aroma is subtle roasty chocolate malt. Pours black with a medium brown head and good lacing. Flavor is offensive. I haven’t said that before. The chocolate malt tastes like stale milk with an astringency I detest in beer. Palate is watery and not really there. Not a very good stout in my opinion.
