Bottle. Pours a black body with a tan head. Dry roasted malt, hints of coffee and vanilla with a dry earthy hop body. Light sweetness with a mild roastiness. eh.

In an odd twist, this one I actually like from Arcadia. Most of their beers disappoint me, but this one surprised me. Good aromas of oats, dark fruit light coffee and vanilla. Black pour with quite possibly the biggest river pollution looking head Ive ever seen. That notwithstanding, the flavor is quite good with notes of fruit, hops, oats roasted malt and bits of vanilla. good mouthfeel.

bottle poured into a snifter has a dark brown color and a thick espresso like brown head that retained well. aroma has chocolate malt, light coffee, medium sweetness, faint burnt barrel wood, and oats. mouth feel is light. flavor has nice mellowed malt, oat qualities, coffee bitterness, light chocolate, nuts, and faint roasted wood. bottle has been in the fridge for a while and has fared very well.

12oz bottle from sample 12 pack from Ann Arbor Whole Foods on November 29, 2008. Deep, dark brown-black with a light brown head… smelled the choc-o-coffee as I poured it into the mug. Very thick and tar-y, almost like spent oil. Roasted, woody flavor. Nearly smoked. Not that light bodied, but smooth as if it were. Dense – even the glass is heavy. Chewy, almost like an oatmeal cookie. Oh… it’s an oatmeal stout. Guess that makes sense.

Pours with a five-finger, brown head that fades slowly and leaves some lace. Color is black, no hint of ruby. Light carbonation and light-medium body. Nose is sweet and nutty. Smooth but on the thin side, flavor is roasted chocolate that finishes with a slight baker’s chocolate taste. Not nearly as dry as a Guinness. $2.10 for a 12oz bottle from Tully’s Beer and Wine Wells, Me.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Opaque brown/black color with a frothy tan head. Rather tart aroma of toasted malt; might be hop involved. Medium body with frothy carbonation. A little chocolate and coffee with the toasted malt, and there seems to be floral hop. Sort of an oscillation between stout and lighter, hoppier ale. Makes me think Belgian. Even slightly vinous. Quite unusual. Good, too.

Pours black with a big tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and what smells like lactose. Taste is rich, malty and sweet, with a slight bitterness. Really good.
